How did this get released?

This was my mini review on another forum

Is this the state at which games are released today? Is this what happens when a publisher forces you to push a game live when it's far from finished? And why on EARTH did PCFormat give the game 80%? And how was PCFormat able to review it when they did? It wasn't even released? I thought they didn't review prereleased games.

The game plays like it is beta code. I've stuck with it, 'cause the idea is good, but it's so piss poorly implemented it's extreme. It's amazing this game was even let out the door. Lets list the bugs so far.

1. Constant, random CTD on every system people have played this on.
2. Collision detection is piss poor. PCFormat said it's hard to get close to ships sometimes due to collision detection. Meaning ships avoiding each other. Yes they do, but still friendly AI hit each other while fighting. Sinking each other. Also you can be a few feet away, yet your hear noise as if your hitting the ship your near, when you're not.
3. Missing sound.
4. Ships collied, CTD
5. Doing nothing but sailing out of port, CTD
6. Loading into town, CTD
7. Going from the shipyard to maybe the pub, CTD
8. Say your hold is 5000 units. Recently it has, on my ship, being going over and my hold now has 8000 units in, yet can only hold 5000 units.
9. Related to the above bug. My other ships in the fleet. Their hold has gone from 3000 units to a bug ridden 485839390284 units.

I'm sure there are more bugs but can't remember them now.

This is the worst state I've EVER seen a game. How the hell this made it onto market is anyone's guess. And how the hell PCFormat gave it 80% is even worse. It clearly, clearly shows they didn't play it for long enough to give a proper review. We know this for the fact LOADS of people and not just me, are experiencing the same bugs. The patch 1.42 is also out but people have reverted back to the previous patches because this has made things worse. PCFormat reviewed this game before these patches, so how on Earth they missed all these bugs is beyond me.

What is worse, is the money wasted buying this game. Due to not being able to return PC games, me and 1000s of others are out of pocket and can do nothing about it. I just hope the developers and publishers go out of business.

2 seems to be common practice for reviewers to review a game that they have never actually played - evidenced by the number of Ãœber-Game-Killing-Bugs from games glowingly reviewed (by other reviewers) over the past 3 years.

3 wait for consumer response before purchasing <i>any</i> game. Can't wait for the 6 month reviews of Sid Meier's Railroads re-release.

Agree 100% with JoeyPesci. As for not being able to return the game, I always (well almost always) buy my games from EB (Electronic Boutique) - there's tons of them in Australia (Sydney). They allow you to take back your game (any console even PC) within 1 week regardless of the reason. I've done this many a time and would have undoubtedly done it with AOP had I not read all the terrible reviews first, and not bought the game in the first place.

There's just about nowhere in the US that will allow returns (unless either for an exchange for the same game, or if the package is unopened). I hate EB; their local store now carries no PC games whatsoever, only console crap. You have to go to their online store for PC games now, and still get charged sales tax, plus shipping... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />
I get all my games from Amazon now. You sometimes have to wait a little longer, but they're tax free, and free two-day shipping (with Amazon Prime). You can't beat that deal with a stick!

Yep, I've given up on EBGames too for the same reasons. Lately I've found that if I do some online price checking on recently released (popular) games I can get a pretty good price.

For example:

Walmart had Joint Task Force for $40 a couple of weeks ago, a $10 savings. I got it. Noticed also that they had a sale on Company of Heroes for $40 too last weekend.

Picked up AOP at Circuit City a week ago for $19.99, another $10 savings.

Walmart has Pacific Storm for $29.99, another $10 savings over everybody, including Amazon.

So, check around for game prices on brick and mortar web sites. They may be available locally for less than you think.

I just got Pacific Storm from Amazon a few days ago. It looks to be really good, but man is it complicated. Steep learning curve! Still going through the tutorials. Think I'm going to need a joystick too for this one..

Yeah, Pacific Storm is a fantastically intricate RTS game. I haven't even touched the strategic part yet. The 3D battle engine gives me plenty to play with right now. Best naval tactician game I've seen.

Glad to hear; this one should keep me busy for a very long time. Akella should take notes from Buka; they seem to be a Russian developer who have got it right...

Cap'n Tucker,

I agree, every game I've played from Buka has been top-notch. They really seem to put the time and effort into making sure that not just the game play, but even the translations make complete and total sense.

Akella could definitely afford to learn a bit from them.
