<!--QuoteBegin-DJ1+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(DJ1)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I read in an article that the team now continously working on to improve the graphics. The differens is big between the first and the latest screenies.

The graphics are now not stunning but not bad either... I even find the 'sailing' graphics reallyattractive....

Strangly the maincharacter is what looks worst... it usually is the other way around.

but the maybe will update the maincharacter too!?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

You said it yourself there.
They have a rough sketch for the characters to make sure they are at least playable. Then when they see that they are, they will smooth the character out and further improve other graphics.

Pirates of the caribbean sucks for 3 reasons. 1) you cant name your pirate. 2) you cant name save files. And 3) the games name is PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN and it doesnt even take place in the caribbean. I played this game for 20 mins than uninstalled it. Anyone you mentions this pece of crap in the same sentence as sid meiers pirates makes me very angry. Graphics, swordfights, it doesnt matter because i know this game is going to rule!

Please, pull up a keg, have a seat, and have a couple on us! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> We're glad you sailed into these fair waters, and we hope to see you here often! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

<snicker!>

Sorry, I don't mean to laugh. Rabiddogg, I thoroughly understand your feelings as PotC - unmodded - is unfortunately a very lame game... HOWEVER, you should take a look at the modifying some of the people around here - and at other gaming sites - have done to PotC. They have made it a totally different game, much more challenging, much more interesting, and DEFINITELY much more playable...

I think you would like it. Take a look through the Modding section of this forum and see what people have done or are doing - read a little about Build 11.0 - and maybe give it a try. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Bah! POTC has driven me soo far down the darkside theres no turning back for me. besides I returned the game already. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" />

Surprisingly POTC is one of the very few games that I reinstall and play again every so often. Of course that is due to the updates that come out of this site. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

By the way, with the updates from this site you <i>can</i> rename your character.

Rabiddogg, that's a shame. The game is SO MUCH BETTER modded... You should really take a look in the POTC Modding section of this forum to see what some of us have done... You may find that buying the game again will be worth your while... IMHO, modded, PotC is one of the best pirate games I have played in years.

This is not to say I will not buy Pirates when it comes out, noo, I will buy it - have been looking forward to this one for a long long time - and every time there are new updates, I see more and more that I am going to enjoy this one all the more. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I'll second that Cat! Ordinarily POTC would have been sent to the dusty depths of my junk box.. but POTC has lasted on my drive for quite some time due to the build mods. I do have high hopes for Pirates! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

Ok, to get this thread back on track:

I'm really worried about sword duels now.

I saw one of these gameplay movies, and the stupid cartoon character did a backflip in the middle of a duel! Ridiculus! I also read something about pulling off special moves with key combinations?

Aaarg, what is this `console-esque`-`childish-nonsense`!?

The original system where every move was but one click/direction away was pure usability bliss! High, mid, low, thrust, slash, parry, dodge, all in eight simple directions, and with tonnes of possibilities for intricate and interesting duels!

I don't care that it may have looked boring, because it wasn't! If you knew how to play your cards right, you could judge moves in advance and move to strike before the opponent!

If I'd been responsible for the new Pirates! I'd further develop this system by putting an analogue control to the sword, so that high/mid/low (and speed/power) could be more dynamic. Not more moves, just more dynamic.

I wonder if Firaxis could consider putting in either an "oldschool" combat mode, or a "hardcore" combat mode?

Well, I think the backflip thing is just in addition to the regular controls - it wouldn't be necessary to use it to win - or duel - it's just there to use if you want to. I think all the regular controls for dueling still exist... There's just some icing on the cake, so to speak - for those folks out there who want a little more panache to their swordplay. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Hi eobet,

Actually, you've answered your own question/request without even knowing it. The backflip is a specialized version of the "jump, one of the defensive manuevers along with "dodge" and "parry." In fact, as I recall, if you "judge moves in advance" and time it right, you turn your backflip into a counterattack. It's all part of a pretty damn fun complicated duel of timing, anticipation, feints, and fun things happening all at once.

I'll see if we can't make one of our next videos focus a bit more on the dueling. But there's still a lot we haven't had a chance to show yet, like the land battles, so it may have to wait its turn. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

Could you answer if the `8-directional` system of attacks/defense is still in place?

I don't care for memorizing special moves. I think it is an unintuitive and slow system, suitable for console kids, and not PC gaming. It is things such as this which scares away the `8-bit` people like me, since we're older now, and not as quick on our trigger thumbs as we used to be.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Jeff, thanks for popping in! Looking forward to that video, that would be great! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

come on! sids the lead programmer. hes not going to release some crap game.dueling in the original pirates game was unintuitive and slow. this new system looks more complex and looks like a hell of alot more fun. so worry not everything is going to be alright
