Mademoiselle Tartane

rupertlittlebear

Retired Duke
Pirate Legend
Sid Meier's Pirates! Live the Life likes to call a Tartane by the game name of War Canoe.

Here is a real model of a 18th century French Tartane.
Older information is harder to get, seems that the Tartane was a very common European vessel that nobody thought anything about.

How many men would you need in a crew to sail such a thing? I feel this urge inside me, calling me out to the sea in something like that...

And ready to challenge a Ship of the Line.

She doesn't have but a couple of cannon ports, I can't imagine you'd need a large crew to handle her... Interesting topgallant rig...

Hi all,

tartanas were very small ships, used for fishing(these were often not fully decked), smuggling, trade, piracy, privateering, coast guard duties, recce, liaison, you name it.

It was a very succesful design, incredibly manouverable, tough and seaworthy for it`s size. Quite fast also. Mostly used in the Mediterranean.

In af Chapmans "Architectura Navalis Mercatoria" there are some drawings and a very brief description of tartanas.

One of my favourite ships it is.

Regards, Oldtimer

i can say that loks quite good but that top-gallant...maybe would be better if was in 1 piece...it looks so strange probably because is small vessel and that 2 tiny sails are weird to me <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> ...
