Melee combat.

Hello, new to the forums <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />.

I read about playlogic and such going through various changes for AOP's release in the western market and one them being "sword fighting" mechanics.

Anyone have a clue what they mean?

Going by akella's past with their previous games the melee combat wasn't done at all very well imo, it was just a button masher with a block button, I felt it could have been a looooot better.

However after watching the video/s for AOP I can see...they haven't really. It still looks for a lack of better words, like a mess. Just "thrown" together spamming various melee moves with no actual strategy to it or anything.

The parries/blocks don't look like they actually DO block rather then it seems you push block and your guy simply blocks any/all attacks at him or what not. (IE a thrust is blocked even though your guy is just holding his sword upward...while the thrust went to another part of your body).

I was hoping they'd have combat as in depth as say, Severance: blade of darkness or something.

Hopefully playlogic can give that part of the game a good overhaul and make melee combat actually "fun" to play and not simply a button mashing game or "attack attack attack" block...attack attack attack.

I would hope for a decent swordplay simulation as well, with sets of various attacks, dodges and blocks, that are different depending on the sword type that you use (falchion, sabre, rapier etc.).

But, looking at the video, I doubt that's going to happen. Which is a pity.

Right now, the swordplay is very simplistic, not fluid and not as much fun as in SM Pirates! Its quite difficult with the default blade but once you get better blades by capturing enemy chips its far too easy - you dont even have to put a single skill/ability point in fencing/fencing related abilities. fencing and boarding need serious balancing.
however with all its flaws i still enjoy this game. :)

You never know- they still have time to improve it before release <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Either way, I'm looking forward to it, but not as much as some other titles due to be released

Melee combat and land controls in general were improved significantly in the patches after the Russian release - we've added strafing and combos, allowing the use of a more intuitive WASD + mouse controls scheme (although you can still use PotC-style controls if you want). There are 4 attacks and 3 defence moves, so the fighting is alot more dynamic and varied now.

What i'd like to see in a melee fight would be that if you keep pressing the block move key it's of no use because your character stops blocking after, say, 2 secs or so. That would force ppl to watch an enemy closely and only press <BLOCK-KEY> at the opportune moment.

You do that with 2 enemies and you'll end up with a pretty intense swordfight. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

That's all for now. Since i don't post here that much i'd like to add that nothing i've read about AoP up till now sounds bad or boring in any way. In fact, the more i read here the more i feel .... cursed, forced to wait until it comes out in Europe.

It's beginning to hurt arrrr! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />
