Missing Dialogs

Izzie

Landlubber
Computer specs:

AMD 750MHz processor
GeForce MX 4000 128 MB
348 ram
SoundBlaster Audio PCI 128D
DX 9.0c
Windows 98

When I try to play the game on this computer all the dialog boxes are empty. I really have no idea why. I would really like to get it to run on this computer to end the power struggle over our main computer.

Didja install it correctly ? Run the English.bat ?

Thats pretty crazy... empty dialogs. If I would have to make an ed-u-muh-kated guess... I would say that the ram is seriously not enough for the enormous size of the Build Mod additions.

I have seen my POTC use 89mb of pure ram (non paged). Thats just the application. Now, the SYSTEM itself takes up another MASSIVE chunk of ram.

What you would probably have to do, is stick another chip in that machine. Or swap the 128 and 256 you have for two 512s... if it can handle it.

Hmmm... try a clean re-install.

Don't know about the RAM, though. I've only got 256 at the moment and have no problems apart from the occassional ctd.

No that was happening to me in the plain vanilla stock game. I never installed any builds since the plain game isn't working. I wasn't sure if it could handle the builds but it does exceed the requirements for the game itself.

I've had quite a few times when the text would disappear altogether. In many places, not only dialogues. My guess is the memory lack. Used to happen to me after playing the thing for a while without restart ( I know there are memory leaks all around).

Original poster: retest this rebooting before the test. If you stop encountering problems of this kind, it is probably the lack of memory after numerous save/loads that is causing the text to disappear.

If ALL the dialog boxes are empty, is it possible that a font is missing?

I think your right. I used our network to send a known working copy to that computer and I forgot that the stock game requires the CD and that error is blank except for the OK and EXIT buttons. After doing some further digging, while trying to access some of the help files in windows a few of those text boxes are also empty. Any clue how to find which font or font size must have been removed? To be honest this computer hasn't been used for a very long time and we really don't know who did what to it last.

The game uses its own fonts and font file formats. These won't ever be used by Windows, and the game won't use any Windows fonts (to the best of my knowledge).

If you're having problems with fonts gone missing from Windows, that's a different problem. There are probably ways to transfer fonts over a network and get them working with Windows, but I've never tried it.

As for the game, make sure you have all the necessary files on the other computer. Fonts appear to be kept in Pirates of the Caribbean\RESOURCE\Textures\FONTS.

I had a similar problem once, It only effected my game. It was caused by graphics card drivers that were too recent. you got a nvidia graphics card like me...

let me see

When I installed the game "Command and Conquer: First Decade" it did something to my directX that sorted out POTC. I can only say it must have modified Direct X in some way to allow the games command and conquer and red alert 1 to run, and this lead to my belief that it sorted out POTC

However if your problem effects windows as well....
you haven't got a virus eating your font files have you?

I know we have no current virus problem. I was aware that it had one once but my mom had taken it to someplace for repair and they got rid of it. I have a security suite installed and it didn't find anything. I looked in the POTC folders and the fonts are all there.

As far as the drivers go, the card is new. I just put it in just so we could play some of the games that needed a better card then the piece of junk that my mom had =). Starting to see why she dumped this thing on me in the first place. So getting the latest drivers off the website isn't a good idea? I just really don't get why the fonts won't load. I did see at least one line. When Nathanial tells Malcolm " I see". Somehow since that was the only line I saw it struck me funny.

Thankyou all for trying to help with this mess. Nice part is at least one of the online games that we play does work on this one so I can at least play POTC on 1 computer.

If you just installed a new card, they you'll need to get new drivers.

I've had cases where the newest graphics driver causes some game not to work, and I had to go back to an older version of the driver. But a later version of the graphics driver solved the problem. Yeah, go ahead and get the new graphics driver.

In all the time I spent as an online Helper at GameSpy (about 8 months) I only told two people to upgrade their graphics drivers. They had specific problems that were known issues with certain older drivers. I think this is the third time ever I've told someone to upgrade a graphics driver. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

If your computer is a Packard Bell or a bottom-of-the-line Dell, then attach a chain to it. It's a boat anchor.

LOL no worse it's an old Gateway. I did download the new drivers but I'm putting off installing till later. I just can't deal with that thing anymore today =)

PS. Only a ding dong buys a Bell.

Are you still having this problem? If so, open up engine.ini in your main PotC folder and set debuginfo to 1. Then start the game and after the problem occurs, close it again. There should be a system.log and compile.log file in your main PotC folder and possibly an error.log as well. Show the contents here. That might help to figure out why it isn't working.
