Multiple Build 13 Questions

cwineman

Landlubber
I've been playing the latest build and I am loving it. As stupid as it might sound, my favorite new thing is being able to save the poor bastards floating around in the water after I've sunk a ship.

I have several questions though.

First, when I first started playing this game, there were some problems in the mission order where if you did certain parts of quests first you would be unable to finish other quests. I am working on the "helping the church" mission and the "strange things" mission. I've gotten to a part where the Redmond priest tells me to speak to Father Gareth(?). I think he's supposed to be in the Redmond (as opposed to Greenford) church at this point, but he isn't. Have I done something wrong?

Next, a long time ago I started <a href="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=2879&hl=" target="_blank"><u>this</u></a> thread about improving my officers. My main beef was that I couldn't improve certain stats of some of the officers I picked up. For example, Rys Bloom from Redmond. I can't improve his sailing stats because of some arbitrary limitation. In the old thread, some folks helped me get around this. Now it looks like files have changed and I'm not sure what to do - assuming that there is anything that I can do.

Now for some minor problems. I am getting annoyed by the maximum game save limit. Isn't there a way to increase or eliminate this limit? I thought I had done that in the past, but it might not be possible in this build. Why did the original developers put these arbitrary limits in this game?

Also, when I start the game it takes a long time. That's okay, but there is a little purple swirly animation (Disney, I think) that I would like to avoid. Basically, I want it to go to the load game screen as fast as possible. I don't mind waiting, but I don't like unnecessary splash screens slowing things down. I think I was able to remove that screen in the past, but I'm not sure how I did it.

Thanks,

-cwineman

delete the video

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->delete the video<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
That's right, thanks.

Specifically, for anyone else who wants to do this, delete the<b> <!--fonto:Courier New--><span style="font-family:Courier New"><!--/fonto-->WaltDisneyLogo.wmv<!--fontc--></span><!--/fontc--></b> file in the <b><!--fonto:Courier New--><span style="font-family:Courier New"><!--/fonto-->\Pirates of the Caribbean\RESOURCE\VIDEOS<!--fontc--></span><!--/fontc--></b> folder.

Any ideas on the other, probably more difficult, problems.

This probably won't help much, but when I played the game I finished the "Missing children quest" first before I completed the church mission, because I wanted that black frigate. Then as I remember, everything else fell into place.

As far as "Saves" go, the game allows 40 saves, but I have never used more than 10. Don't know if you can change it.

Meigger,

Hmm. Crap. I think your right. I think that back with the original game you had to do things like you said - save the children then help the church. I hate to have to go back to that point in the game, but I guess I might have to.

Regarding saves, I have less than 40 and I am already getting prompted that I have done too many saves. I figure I have about 20 or so. It's not a big deal. I'm more interested in finding a solution to my officers problem and the quest order problem.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->do you really need that many saves? why not delete a few?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I don't <i>need </i>the saves but I prefer the option. For example, I just found out the I couldn't finish all of the quests that I would like to finish because there is a screw up in the game. I am able to go back to a save game and start from there as opposed to restarting from the beginning. Sweet.

I delete games all the time. Instead of asking why I need so many save slots, I would ask, "Why put an arbitrary limit on how many I can have?".

morgan terror, my last post sounds snottier than intended. I mean no offense. I just don't see the reason for a game save limit and I would like to get around it. BTW, <b>Meigger </b>is right, there are 40 save slots by default. I had twice as many games saved as I thought.

Back to my original questions, I figured out the splash screen issue. As <b>rupertlittlebear </b>suggested, I deleted the disney video file. I also needed to delete a few more, but I can't remember the names (an Akella video and a Bethesda video, I think). After that, the game started and went right to the "load" screen.

As far as my quest order goes, I restarted from a game save I had in Greenford before I finished the "help the church quest". I hope that gets around my problem. Sucks to have to start from back there, though.

I still haven't heard any advice on my "officers" question. If anyone knows what to do, please let me know.

well, you're supposed to be able to change the fact that you can't increase skills that are at 0 in the buildsettings. but when you change the option so that you can increase a skill at 0, it doesn't work. you're still unable to do it.

I think somebody once tried increasing the maximum number of savegames further, but I recall that caused bugs somehow. I don't know how or why or what anymore though.

Set ENABLE_SKILLUP_IFZERO to 1 in PROGRAM\InternalSettings.h

Pieter Boelen,

I'm not going to worry about the game save limit.

You also posted this which might address my officers question:

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Set ENABLE_SKILLUP_IFZERO to 1 in PROGRAM\InternalSettings.h<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Is that a pretty safe thing to enable, or if I do it, can I expect problems later on?

the only thing i kow is that that setting didn't work when i used it. no negative side-effects though.

Maybe you need to do a reinit if you haven't started a new game... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />

i always do. but it doesn't matter, as i currently don't have the game anymore anyway. but i will likely install it again later, when i don't need by drive-space for other games. somehow, PotC manages to take up 80% of it. i think there might have been some non-deinstalled files in it.

I haven't tried it yet, but I intend to shortly. Just so that I know, how do I do a "re-init"? I'm pretty sure you are talking about simply typing a key once the game is started, but I'm not sure.

Also, is there a way to get the last messages that were outputted? Generally, I like how fast the messages appear and then go away, but sometimes I miss something and I don't know how - assuming it's possible - to get it back.

re-init is F11. you can slow down the speed at which messages dissapear, but i don't know how.

I think setting ENABLE_SKILLUP_IFZERO to 1 is pretty safe. It was turned on by default in Build 12.1, I think and I never had any problems with it. You might need to start a new game though, or at least press F11 to reinit your current savegame.

CouchcaptainCharles knows the way to slow down the on-screen messages. It IS possible, but I keep forgetting how to do it. Send CCC (short for CouchcaptainCharles) a PM and I'm sure you'll have your answer in no-time. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Just posting to let people know that the ENABLE_SKILLUP_IFZERO toggle works fine. I don't know if I <i>had</i> to, but I did a re-init just in case. But at the least, you don't have to start a new game.

Also, I figured out the mission order for the "help the church" and "strange things" missions. You do messs things up if you "solve" the "help the church" mission by accusing or exonerating the father in Greenford. You need to get at least to the point in the "strange things" mission where you talk to the guy on the QC pirate island. Otherwise, Father Gareth(??) wont be there to talk to you on Redford like he's supposed to.

Anyway, thanks for the help, all.
