Pirate History

Captain-Gwynn

Landlubber
One of my favorate thing to do in my `past-time` is to dive on old `Tall-Sailing` ship wrecks. And one of my favorite wrecks is the Pirate Ship "El Deoblo" found off the Outer Banks in NC, USA.

She was a big Three mast ship carring 28 guns, and went down in August 1738 in a storm. She is in 100 feet of water and in mosty pieces since she went down almost 266 years ago. I found her while looking for a WWII frieghter that went down in that area. I have been driving on her now for about 6 years now.

About 4 years ago after a hurricane came thu, I went down to see how she made out the storm, and this is what I found. One Spanish Piece of Eight in great shape. It looked a little aged, but you could read the whole coin. The history if this ship is that she went down with 4000 coins freshly mented in Mexeco City and the coins where on there way to St. Augustine, Fla. to meet with a tresure ship bound for Spain. The coins and the shiop that carried them never made it. The El Deoblo stopped them and then headed north. To go down herself off NC. To this day this was the only coin found.

This image does not show the coin the way I would like, but you see the most of it. The coin is very silver and very detailed, even the edge of the coin is still there. One Peice of Eight from 1738, just thank about that...

Only 22 years after the death of BlackBeard. If only this coin could talk, the last time it was held was by a Pirate in 1738....

I love it that you've found the only coin yet... There might be more still...

I've always wanted to dive on a shipwreck... The WW2 freighter sounds interesting, too. American? Sunk by a `U-Boat`?

Yes the American ship Byron T. Benson sunk by the `U-552` Herr Topp, on 04/04/42

Did you ever find her?

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> Ships are traditionally referred to as "she", yet they name them after men... What's up with that? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />
