I played Pirates! over the weekend and it's awesome. For those that liked the original, you'll like this version too. It's a great update with some tweaks and added features. Makes the package even more complete than before. Who would have thought that was possible of such a classic? Although I would have prefered more realistic looking graphics, the cartoony ones have grown on me. All the `mini-games` are great. The ship combat, the turn based ground battles on towns, fencing, and even dancing. The sneaking into town `mini-game` is ok, but afer doing it a few times it becomes tedious. For anyone looking for another game to play I highly recommend SM Pirates!.

As I posted in my 1st post for this forum, the game is excellent, I am glad they didn't change it to much. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

A dream has come true for me since I played it last on my Amiga when I was a Child. Hello all surprisingly `kind-hearted` pirates (I'm sure the friendliness disappears when you're out at sea, right ?). <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

The fact is that I am so close to buying this game. I have about eight `PC-games` collecting dust in my shelves which
I'm planning to trade in for a new great game, and like I wrote; I'm 98% ready to buy this title.

To be honest, I've never played the original Pirates back in the old days. That has forced me to read and rely on as
many reviews of the game as I've been able to find. As I see it, there is one downside and one upside with never
having played the original Pirates.

Downside is that I don't have any prior experience with this exact type of game - so I can't really rely on any previous
gaming to decide wheather I should buy this game or not.
On the other hand, people having played the original Pirates probably had <b>some</b> of the cash they spent on this
title consumed by a mere `tune-up` in graphics and sound whilst <b>all</b> of <i>my</i> cash would go to a "completely new game".

After having read somewhere around 15 - 20 reviews (both english and swedish) of SM's Pirates !, the only negative
thing I've come across would be reviewers complaining about repetitiveness after having been stuck playing the game for
hours without stopping (but hey, games tend to get repetitive after a few days straight) - as well as a few complaints
that there wasn't enough changes from the original to justify the price (but again; that doesn't concern me who is still a
virgin when it comes to this title).

The thing is that I like games with some economy, games with the feeling of achievement as you play. Big favourites
for me in the past have been; Transport Tycoon, Sim City series, ThemePark, RC Tycoon, various RPG titles
(Morrowind, DungeonSiege, Diablo etc.), adventure games like the MonkeyIsland series, Simon the Sorcerer, Strategy-
games like StarCraft, C&C, Dune II... and I believe SM's Pirates to be a mix of a lot of these different genres. I like
games that holds a lot of options and possibilities without getting too deep into the mechanics of it all. Games you learn
quite fast, games you can go and play during commercials, games with fair graphics, a nice feeling/setting/mood (a la
MonkeyIsland)...

Other titles I've been deciding between are NFSU 2, The Battle for `Middle-Earth`, RCT3, Bloodlines... but somehow, SM's
Pirates sort of <i>feels</i> the right way to go. I will be trading in ~eight older games (+ some cash) for whatever title I choose
and once I leave the store, there's no turning back. I would have loved for a demo of Pirates to be available (since I'm no
fan of `d-loading` warezed games, only if it's just for a trial purpose).

Is there anyone here who bought SM's Pirates without having played the original - and if so, what did you think, has it been
worth the money ? I just need a final push here guys. I'm walking by the gamestore on thursday and I <b><i>will</i></b> go in there and
buy something ! But since games aren't fairly cheap these days, I want to be very sure of what I'm about to walk home with.
(Sorry for the long post - but on the other hand, I didn't force you to read it all through. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> )

Thanks to anyone who share their thoughts !

The one thing that impressed me most about this new version was the feeling that you are actually part of a "living" world. By that, I mean that things go on around you all the time.

Traders will move from port to port, other pirates will ransack towns, communities will thrive or fall, AI ships will battle it out with other AI ships, immigrants will migrate, new governors will be put in place, etc.

Of course, you can do all these things as well, but it's so awesome that it happens without you as well. That wealthy port you just left might get ransacked by pirates and be down to poor by the next visit. The economy model is superb and I about the only thing I could wish for is better support for traders. You can make tons of money trading, therefore affecting your wealth score, but I would love an option that allows it to affect your fame as well. Who says you can't be a famous trader?

You wont be disapointed

Buy the game, I have played both the 1st game (1987) and now this one, and this release is FUN dude. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Avast ye swab, go purchase the game and have some fun sailing the spanish main <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

One thing I would ask for is to make sacking towns give you more fame. I mean, heck, you just STOLE a whole freakin town and you get maybe 1 out of it, not sure if you even get that much. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Oh well, off to find more treasure! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

The original turned me into a bit of a pirate freak along with Pirate legos. I've played just about every version and grew up playing the IIgs version, which was the best before I played the Amiga version which had amazing graphics and sound for the time. I never could get into Pirates! Gold... I was excited when I bought it but very disappointed with it. Its style and graphics and inferface were all uglier and less intuitive I thought. Maybe it was because I was playing on a newer computer but the thing that annoyed me most was that there was complete silence when sailing the sea. Anyways, so far I really like the new Firaxis version of Pirates. It has everything that made the original great plus the little changes that make it better. And the things that are gone won't be missed in my opinion. Did anyone ever really use that astrolobe/sunscope thingy? The only changes I'm not sure I like involve the speed of your fleet being determined by your flagship rather than the slowest ship in your fleet, and that being advancement in other nations is way too easy. If 3 nations are all at war with 1, then you can easily advance in all the 3 nations by constantly sacking the 1. I remember it being much more difficult to advance in other nations and required constant tribute and Letters of Marque from each nation.

As I wrote this, I just remembered other things I wish were included. I wish the Age that was before the first age of the new Pirates still existed. I forget exactly what it was called but I think it was 1580 and was called the Silver Age or something. It was basically the age where Spain was at the height of its power so nearly all of the cities are controlled by the Spanish. The Dutch aren't even in this age and I don't think sloops exist either. And certain cities aren't founded yet. In the original, this was my favorite age. It was perfect for terrorizing the Spanish and I always tried to sail around the Caribbean and take over every single Spanish town and convert it to English. And another thing that's missing that would've been nice are the scenarios that the original had.

Old Capt´n Straydogs opionion...opinitum..opitum...thoughts of this is game are, that it´s worth of solid five parrots. I hated the dancing first, but with liberal help of the rum *hic* got the hang of it. Hey, it´s difficult to move on solid ground. I need rolling waves and moving deck. Add smell of gunpowder and roar of cannons, and date would be perfect. But alas no. Those damsels agree to meet you only in balls.
Perfect work from Uncle Sid and the team. Arrrr.... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" /> *Hauls in even more rum for the whole gang, and for newcomers <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> *

This - is - the - greatest - game - I've - ever - played - in - my - life! (so far).

To be honest. Got my Pirates! this week but did not touch it till this morning (had to work a lot this week, except for today) and just played 15 hours straight away.

Sid Meier is a pure genius, he picked up a great game and transferred it into the world of sophisticated `Computer-Games` of today. First, I was a little worried, becaus a huge amount of time of my childhood I spent playing Pirates! on my C64. So the expectations were really high, and I thougth they could never be met. But I was completely wrong. After starting the game and watching the intro ("Ah, yes, ye olde quest for the family") and then getting to the tavern to sign up, I could have cried. It just felt _so_ like 15 years ago! So many memories came back to my mind, and every now and then playing the game you see something familiar...

What Sid Meier did was just like what he did with Civ3. Not trying to make a new, better game out of it! He knew his games are great, and so he just added some polished GFX and Music (oh i love this music, especially changing the instruments depending on where you are in town) und some minor improvement that fit in _very good_!

I especially love the swordfights, they are just like the ones in `Pirate-Movies`, throwing around buckets, pushing your opponents from a stair etc.

Sorry, I don't want to write more, I have to go on playing!

To anyone out there: PLEASE buy this game, PLEASE help make this not one of these "The crowd liked it, but it sold very bad"-titles. Anyone who liked Pirates back in '87 will love this. BUY IT! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

<!--`QuoteBegin-ea31`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(ea31)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->...To anyone out there: PLEASE buy this game...[/quote]Hey man, don't do that - you're stressing me out here. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
I bought this game yesterday - haven't even installed it yet though. Manual is holding me back, I'm on frikkin' page 67 out of ~88 !
"<span style='color:brown'>Come on, get a grip, shred the manual and start playing</span>" - you say.
Well, I can't. I'm a manualaddict and I feel I just <b>have</b> to read through it all before I start playing, so that I don't miss out on anything important.

Very nice to read such positive opinions though !
I hope they get that `story-section` going too - can't wait to read about you others' adventures.
Man, I'll have to go get my PotC DVD movie to ease my mind and make sure I'm in the right mood before I start playing. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbs1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2up" border="0" alt="thumbs1.gif" />
