i don't think we could copy the data from the game into PotC. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> it doesn't use the same engine. how about a menu like the options menu in the game where you can select your destination listed on the tabs in the new menu?

files then. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> the stuff that those towns are made of, the towns themselves and the building overlays, and the stuff that makes the whole thing work.

Pixels? Bitmaps? We'd need to make a whole new interface for that just to not have to add new oridinary 3D town models. That's more work than adding ordinary towns, I think.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Just to make things easy, you mean? Sounds like a tremendous lot of work to me. More work than copying an existing town.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Hold on. By 'new menu' I just mean a picture in background - like one of those currently used as location loading screens - and three buttons to open the already existing store, shipyard & crew hire menus of those towns. We now how to do that - you do remember the choose-your-main-character menu, for exemple? This is very simple to do. The only hard word you'd be to add the Russian's new map. I don't say we should do this, even if I'd enjoy it...

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Though the creating of new land locations isn't that complicated either. Just copying existing code and reusing town models. However, more towns would mean more reused town models. Also new towns would need to be integrated into the game with interesting characters and quests.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> Yes, you understand perfectly : the problem isn't adding new places but to have a coherent main map, avoiding empty/buggy locations with the same random characters, and no special person & quests which make them look a bit desertic and artificial - as it was the case in a lot of places before Build 13. Adding good-looking locations with quests & inhabitants takes some time, you know that the other risk is having a map too big with a lot of empty islands which breaks the game.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Question: How many towns do we actually need? Is our current worldmap big enough? Do we want to use the Russian map Maximus has somewhere, which would require a lot of additional work? Why not make the entire world? Should, in theory, also be possible, but creates yet more work. Personally I would still be happy to just have our current map filled in with individual locations and new quests without creating more work for ourselves. But that's just me, I suppose.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->I personnaly don't like much the actual map : it doesn't help to have a coherent economical and trading system ingame. Adding the continental coast & ports would really equilibrate all this - how could you imagine the Dutch islands Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire becoming so rich without the illegal chocolate coming from Venezuela, via Coro? Imagine a game about Mediterranean Pirates with only islands! It would be ridiculous.
Adding the entire world is currently undoable & pretty useless. After all, the game is called 'Pirates of the Carribean', that's a precise area. I know that a lot of us are dreaming about Est Indias, and that talking of the Portuguese Empire it wouldn't make sens to add Brazil without the African Coast (Angola, Kongo etc), but none of that is curently needed to have a good game.

Morgan Terror, could you please talk of your game in another topic? I've never heard about it before, so you could explain how it works and what you think we could maybe take from it. But currently I'm afraid it alters the clarity of this topic...

what i'm talking about discerning that game has all the relevance to this topic, so i don't see any reason. besides, i'm done with that. i'm more for the idea of having a simple menu where you can select your destination, like you said. what i proposed to take from the other game was just a random idea.

hmm. well not to get off top but i'm all for making the game fully caribbean cause afterall we've changed almost everything else in the game why not the names of the towns

I think most people are for it. Those unreal names bother me more and more.

they don't bother me at all, but i have noticed that i care less and less about them being changed into proper names. (not being opposed to the idea, i mean)

(not being opposed to the idea, i mean)<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Opposite from me then. But then I didn't use to care either. Until I went to the actual Caribbean. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

well, i just never liked changing major things, so when someone comes up with something like this, i automatically object to it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> it usually dies down, like in this case.

Well, it didn't die down and we've got this mod in the Build Alpha now.
However, we've got a Real Caribbean toggle that, when disabled, restores the original game names.

Sometimes it's not clear what island a town is on though, especially if you're not yet familiar with the game world.
And we've got no worldmap showing town names either.
I had the same problem the other day when fixing the Capitaine Chevalle quest; he mentions he wants to go to "Pirate Settlement",
but never mentions which island it's on. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

But when we'd make it "townname" on "islandname", that'd look weird because you'd get "Conceicao on Conceicao".
I wonder if we should not care about the "Real Caribbean Off" option and just make things work nicely with that mod ON.

Especially when we also change town and island-names based on period, it would be useful if the game DID tell you which island a town was on.
Does anyone have any input on this?

Good idea Pieter, I know that I have got lost a number of times <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

It is a more realistic way to play with real Caribbean islands on as well. I'd rather sail to Jamaica than Redmond any day <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

So basically what I'm proposing:
- Change all town name references to "townname" on "island"
- Making town and island names period-dependent
- Let's not care about oddish effect with Real Caribbean off; who wants to do that anyway? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/razz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":razz" border="0" alt="razz.gif" />

Personally I believe it should be switchable. Both original islands and names should be available and the corrected islands and names should be availalbe.

Cap'n Drow

The "oddish effect" I referred to is that you'd get texts like "Conceicao on Conceicao". Not exactly game-killing, just a bit odd.
Making it work really nice in both instances would make things more complicated than I care to bother with. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />
