Okay folks, here's the lowdown. I've seen lots of misnomers and misnamings of ships in games like this over the years. I figure its time for us all to get a bit more edjimicated and learnt about these here ship things we all love playing with, so over time, I'll be posting interesting sites and places I've discovered for reference information regarding ships, naval history, rigging and any other damned thing that seems something any of us here might be interested in.

I've got quite a collection of links and info myself already, so as I get things I've compiled, I'll also set up a directory on the PA! AOP ftp site, so's anyone who is interested can grab some of the odd documentations I'm going to put together.

I'll also be putting together various tutorials, reference documents and other strangeness and referencing it here on occasion.

Hope you folks don't mind my forwardness about this, but its time we really put together even more useful documentation and information for anyone interested in modding these wonderful games.

Any help, suggestions and support is of course encouraged and appreciated!!

So for our first basic link, I'm going to introduce everyone to ships rigging, which is frequently given to be the names of ships. There are numerous styles of rigging, almost all of which have been used on every shape and size of vessel around. Some examples would be the difference between a Sloop Rigged Barque, A schooner rigged Barque and a Fully Rigged Barque. All basically the same 'framework' of hull, but with differing mast and sail layouts. I won't go fully into detail here, but instead will provide you with the link to a site with a bit more info. Now all this info they have isn't even the complete poop on it, but its a good starting point, especially for those folks that want to model new ships, and want to know how to properly lay out their rigging.

<a href="http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/descriptions/shipsrigging.htm" target="_blank">http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/descript...hipsrigging.htm</a>

Additionally, <a href="http://www.theshipslist.com" target="_blank">The Ships List</a> has a huge collection of additional information that any salty dog should at least know the basics of if you really want to sound like you know what you are talking about.

Next up, a link for those of you interested in actual wooden or even plastic models of tall ships.

<a href="http://www.historicships.com/" target="_blank">http://www.historicships.com/</a>

<a href="http://www.historicships.com/" target="_blank">Historic Ships</a> has the widest and most complete range of buildable models any pirate or naval captain could ask for.

So there you have it folks, the first of many posts I'll be giving you regarding a wide range of subjects and information for your further edjimication as sailors!!

Okay, more edjimication time my friends.

Next up, Royal naval ratings. If you've ever wondered just where these ratings game from and just how far off or not from reality the games were, take a gander at this wikipedia entry for a bit of light reading.

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rating_system_of_the_Royal_Navy" target="_blank">Rating system of the Royal Navy</a>

Now, we've covered a bit about the rigging, you can also stand to learn a bit about just how and why them prettily rigged sails do exactly what they do. This fellow has made it his lifes work to study sails and figure out exactly why they work.

<a href="http://www.arvelgentry.com/" target="_blank">Arvel Gentry's Sails Pages</a>

And last but not least, a look at those Chinese Treasure Junk's I've been talking about. This site has a very impressive video file right at the top. The scientists have actually even started finding evidence that these long mythical Chinese trading monsters really did exist.

Enjoy your further edjimication and I'll post more interesting bits soon!!

Okay my friends, once again it's time ta get ye edjimacated.

First off, a page or two regarding vessel types. These pages specifically relate to what makes a vessel a particular type, some of them also include some of those details about rigging I've already related to you previously.

<a href="http://www.abc.se/~m10354/bld/shiptype.htm" target="_blank">Boat & Ship Types</a>

<a href="http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Vault/1820/WSP/ships.html" target="_blank">Ancient Sailing Ships</a>

And once again I send you off to good old Wikipedia, where you can find this terrific, though far from complete listing of Tall Ships:

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tall_Ships" target="_blank">Wikipedia listing of Tall Ships</a>

And here to the University of Seattle, where they actually run a 12 credit course on the history and usage of early and modern day tall ships:

<a href="http://faculty.northseattle.edu/mnutting/seas/index.html" target="_blank">University of Seattle's 'Lessons from the Sea' Main Page</a>
<a href="http://faculty.northseattle.edu/mnutting/seas/terms.html" target="_blank">University of Seattle listing of Terminology</a>

Once again, I hope you find the reading and reference useful as well as informative.
