Wow... impressive... is it really a "sub", though? It looks an `awful-lot` like a monitor. Still, early steamships wouldn't be ~too~ great a stretch to fit into POTC... hehe... so when can I expect an armed Great Eastern?

It _is_ a monitor; moreover, _the_ Monitor.
/me hums "The Battle Cry of Freedom". You get one guess why my avatar's blue and gold...

The monitor ~was~ `semi-submersible` in that is was the first ship in which the crew quarters, and most of the crew stations, were entirely below the waterline. There were skylights through the deck above the officer's quarters, and sometimes - if a wave came over the deck - the officers would look up and see fish above their heads. It must have been the worst ship to serve in if you were afraid of confined spaces, though... even a German `U-boat` must have seemed spacious by the Monitor's standards. Because of it's unseaworthiness, it was not even officially declared a "ship". Sorinsen called it some sort of abbreviated term that basically meant "`self-propelled` maritime defence platform".

In spite of its weeker armament, and lack of exploding shells - I personally think that the monitor was a far more advanced ship than the Merrimac in most respects. The Merrimac ~was~ a true juggernaught, however, and the Civil War may have seen a second famous battle of ironclads at Mobile Bay had the lead monitor not struck a mine and left it to a federal steam `sloop-of`-war (that commanded by Faragut himself, I believe) to battle the Tennessee (sister of the Merrimac).

(I'm not sure why they were called "sloops"-`of-war`, as these federal ships were essentially large frigates - `multi-masted` and many with two gun decks)

A common misconception, however, is that either was the "first" Ironclad. Both were in fact built many years later than the British H.M.S. Warrior, a fully seaworthy iron hulled warship; and, even the Warrior was preceeded through several centuries by the famous "turtle" boats of Korea.

Hampton roads ~was~ the first ~battle~ of ~ironclad vs. ironclad~, however, so these ships do effectively deserve credit for introducing the era when iron hulled vessels would come to dominate naval warfare.

remember the brittish queen 2 century's ago DISCLAMET a sub (the first one invented), just because it had NO FLAG, and could NOT show the Colors and Nation ..........
the sub waz the turtle, and it went to america instead, launched in 1776.....

Nit: Warrior was preceded by Gloire, IIRC.

Re: weaker armament. This is I believe popular misconception, since IIRC a `full-charge` shot from /Monitor/'s gun might well have punctured /Merrimack/'s armor belt. The gun crews were using `half-charges` due to the steam gun explosion on /Princeton/ in the mid 50s. (Princeton, a screw frigate designed by Ericsson and stol..err, sponsored, by Captain Robert Stockton, was equipped with two gigantic steam cannons, Oregon and Peacemaker, the former designed by Ericsson and the latter by Stockton. The latter exploded during test firing killing the Secretaries of State and Navy. Stockton skillfully blamed Ericsson for the incident, leading to distrust of Ericsson's inventions, especially guns).

Also, the seaworthyness of monitors are also due to misconception, or at least for latter monitors (the Monitor herself after all sunk due to caulking of the turret leading to leaks and being towed too fast). Later--`Passaic-class`?--monitors at least had no trouble in high seas, in fact doing better than their supposed escorts/rescuers. In fact--shoot, can't recall the speciifc ship--rode out a Force 7 hurricane when her escorts were forced to make for harbor, who thought she was lost...until they arrived to see her moored at her destination.

We almost succeed in derailing this into a `nuts-and`-bolts ACW discussion, and you have to bring up a (gasp) _movie_.
