Soverign of the Seas

If memory serves, the Soverign of the Seas was the first ship now considered to be a Ship of the Line. The interesting thing is that she had 104 guns, and for about the same cost England could have built 10 of her 40 gun ships.

You are correct. The San Felipe built by the King of Spain in 1690. She carried 110 cannon.

Another ship built in Havanna, Cuba in 1769 called the Santisima Trinidad, carried 120 cannon. However, she was badly damaged in the battle of Cape St. Vincent in 1799. When she was rebuilt they added a fourth deck allowing her to carry 136 cannon. She sailed into the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 and was disabled and captured by the British, however, she sank in a storm the following day.
