As to increase the speed for 8,10 our 16?
I can only UP to 2

When sailing on the map "+" will increase speed up to 2 only.

When sailing actual ship "+" can increase speed up to 8 ( 6 when hostile ships are near or you are engaged in battle)

When in sailing mode and not in range of a enemy ship you can increase the ship speed to 8x, when in range of a enemy ship then the max speed is 6x. (note range of ship is not the range that they can fire on you but the range that the game says you are engaged in battle).
