Stumped what to do next

I've been playing as Peter Blood. I've made it all the way through the Bridgetown / Barbados / Plantation missions twice now. The first time I managed to complete everything and reenter Bridgetown after defeating the two Spanish ships. But I soon ran into the problem of running out of cash. So, I restarted the game, figuring I could avoid a few minor mistakes as well as spend more wisely the money I get after stealing th frigate, etc.

However, the second time through, even after sinking the two Spanish ships, I'm now persona non grata in Bridgetown; the guards attack me immediately and I have nowhere to go to replenish supplies. The ship is slow and cumbersome (my level is too low to operate it), so sailing a long distance is out of the questions. Then there's the pirates, and the Dutch, and the Spanish, all of which have it in for me, too. WTF? I didn't do anything different this time through, except for swindle the old man out of 55,000 piasters in Bridgetown. Is this enough for me to become dead meat everywhere? If so, then it's a fatal game decision. I can't really do anything now, that I can see.

Anyone have a suggestion? I have some cash. Where the heck am I supposed to go? Or, am I just dead meat? What am I doing wrong here?

This is a highly playable game (though Sea Dogs was much easier to learn). However, the interface and in-game information are really terrible. I think maybe this was released only half finished. How hard can it be to have an in-game tutorial?

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Depends on what you did with the 55k. If you kept it all without returning the moneylender's cut, then yeah, the British have a price on your head. The only safe place then would be the French colonies or the pirate towns.

Your Officer Pitt said, before the battle with the 2 Luggers of Spain, about going for French or Pirates... depending on the Encounter Rate you used, it´ll be easier or harder to get to Martinica, a wonderful place to start... One side, French city of "Fort-de-France" to sell the ships you board, at the other side the pirate port of "Le Françoise" to replenish your crew with high skilled warriors in order to make your boardings a bloody mess... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

I have restarted the game sometimes. In the most easy levels of difficulty, when you get out of Barbados, England is hostile to you, but not hostile enough for getting a price to your head, so you can either go for French and English ports without problems.... Now I´m playing on Captain mode, and after getting out of Barbados, England put 25,000 piasters for my head and bountyhunters are chasing me at ANY occasion and ANY port or place.. a real hard time with a Frigate in Dry-Dock and a starting Lugger (money enough to buy a Sloop or a Brig, but the Shipyard didn´t have any of them.. DOH!) and being hunted by more better ships (even once a Corvette with upgraded silky sails, no way to scape <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> ).

Okay, I'm even more confused now. I was mistaken. The Dutch are neutral but they attack me anyway. The British attack me too, even though I fly the British flag.

But here's what I don't understand: once I defeated the Spanish ships outside Bridgetown the first time I played, I was able to enter the town with no problem. The second time, which it turns out was a branch from an earlier save that happened AFTER I gave the money to the moneylender, I get attacked as soon as step off the ship. I can't go anywhere because my crew is too small; and when I exit the port to go back to sea two British ships attack and destroy me.

I'm sorry, but this game is a confusing mess.

The Dutch are neutral to you personally, but they're at war with England and you're an Englishman. And I had no such trouble. Snatched the ship, sailed it to Martinique, stowed it in port control, bought a sloop, and went pillaging.
