swap file set - a possible solution for AOP crashes?

victhor75

Landlubber
So... from the begining:

1. i've installed AOPw 1.41 version
2. AOP SuperMod 1.1 from CyberOps
3. update1 and 2
4. i cleared the swap (min 0; max 0)
5. reboot
6. set the swap to exactely 4000 Mb (min 4000; max 4000) - an advise from POTC topic.
7. i used the same setings for the game that came w Suprmod1.1 except resolution: 1280 x 960
8. play

i've played for 8h continuously and the game was stable (even when i encountered a war fleet w 2 manowars and 3warships)
but then the game crashed.

Before i shut down my PC (was enough for 1 day especialy when CTD) i wiped again the swap (min 0; max 0). then shut down.
Next day, i start my PC, then AGAIN, i set the swap to 4000MB (min 4000; max 4000).
i've played 5h CONTINUOUSLY. NO crashes!!!

it seems to me that there's a BIG,(HUGE) problem with the swap.
every time the game crashes, i have to wipe the swap, reboot then set it again to 4000mb.
if the game DOESN'T crashes, i can exit and later restart the game without ploblem.

Anyway... for me, sadly, is the only way i can play the game continuously (for at least 5h).

If anybody can solve this problem, please do it (i was hopeing CyberOps could fix it, but man, i have a family too so i completly understand him).

My sytem:
p4 3GHz
6600 w 256mb ddr gigabyte
1 Gb DDR
all the updated drivers

Personally in the time i've had this game it hasnt crashed a single time, not even once...
and thats playing ranged from 2 till 8 or 10 hours straight

anyways, i'm curious where you placed your swap file
did you put it on your primary directory like C: or on D: if you have an extra directory?
(i've always had mine on D: btw)

i have the swap on C: w the sistem. I have a 80 gb ide. it's partitioned in c: and d:
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

technicly its better to have the swap file on the d: partition instead of c: where your system is located,
you'll have less fragmentation on your c partition that way which speeds things up a little

anyways, you could try setting it to d: and see what happens

even it's on the same physical HDD?
Well... it's a good idea. Thanks Archea. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

even on the same physical HDD yes

i dont know if you ever noticed it, but when you defragmentate your partition you'l most likely always notice that the c drive is more fragmentated then the d drive, and its even worse if you use the swap file on the c drive

first reason because of it is that its your system partition which gets used a lot more, second is that the swap file messes things up even more in it, while having the swap file on d hardly does anything for that partition
on my system it gave slight speed/memory increase, it might or might not work for you

but because the swap seems to matter a lot for you in aop its worth a shot to try at least <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

i'll do this as soon as i'll be home <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bounce.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":b:" border="0" alt="bounce.gif" />
Thanks again. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" /> This could be the best solution for me.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" /> I have a ATI Radeon 9600 128mb Vidiocard and don"t believe
in updating the drivers! I use the org. which came with the card.
I have updated once, but it was a disaster. Updates maybe good for some games,
but not for others!! Don't forget that most people play more than one game on their
computers and most of them are very demanding. Some even state the card to be used.
. I play AOP version 1.41 and it lasted for quite a while before it became
unstable! Maybe the future of gaming is in consoles, they are a lot cheaper and
stable. The games you buy are made for the console only and don't have to put up
with a buggy operating system!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" />

how to make swap file?? I have no idea about this, but i think this could help me with crashes

Thanks.

Thanks. I wish I checked this forum eariler. The only source for the SuperMod I had found on Google over the weekend was via BitTorrent. Took 12 hours to download.

most of the SuperMod threads are in the Mods forum
(one forum down)

Lots of activity over there lately, you may want to read the threads extra carefully
they can be quite confusing.

Doing that, reboot, reset your swapfile and presto!
However, you will get crashes again, but it'll take quite
while! The only ones are mainly when your ship crashes
into another one during battle! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />
