The Capt. Jack Sparrow Hat !

Thought about buying a copy of a "Jack Sparrow hat", correct me if I'm wrong but its also called a "Tricorn" ..

I've seen a lot of diffrent places that sells 'em but of course I wan't a good quality hat too! I've been searching Bilgemunky's link page and found a few good sellers, but its darn expensive!
One's sure is a good quality, and looks much alike the one in the movie, but its 140$ and I don't have a lot of money on me bank ..
Then I've found one for 23$, but its surely a a turists hat .. And it doesn't look like a "real" one ..

Anyone know a good shop/site that sells a good Jack Sparrow hat ? And maybe even bourght one 'emself ?

Maybe here, no history with this store.

If you want one that has the look and feel you're wanting, then unfortunately it will be quite expensive. There is one exception, though - make it yourself. Wool hat blanks can be gotten for as little as $20, I think. And a Sparrow-style tricorn isn't exactly the most polished thing. It would probably be a fairly easy hat for a novice to recreate. The only tricky bit is finding a supplier of brown blanks - most only carry black.

Hmm.. The only thing I've ever done was a bag .. took a year or so .. so mostly I'm thinking of buying one! The one on <a href="http://www.captjackspiratehats.com/hats.htm" target="_blank">http://www.captjackspiratehats.com/hats.htm</a> is very cool looking! 140$ .. Wonder, have you bourght one of the hats on "Captain Jack's Pirate hats" ?

You know, you could probably get a nice cowboy hat for a lot less and just turn that into a tricorn with a couple of "X" stitches in the appropriate places. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> Just get a hat that doesn't have a high crown, and you should be good to go! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Here's a good source for a well-made leather lid: <a href="http://www.excaliburleather.com/catalog/tricornhat.html" target="_blank">Excalibur Leather</a>

Not the cheapest thing in the world, by a long shot. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huhh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:k" border="0" alt="huhh.gif" />

I have the Captain Jack's Barbossa style hat, and am very happy with it. It's very authentic feeling and durable. Not the most comforatable thing to wear due to the stiffness, but a bandana fixes this and makes it all the better to look at anyways.

Catalina's right about just sticking a couple of "x's" to make a jack sparrow, although I wouldn't start with a cowboy hat. Try <a href="http://www.blockaderunner.com/Catalog/catpg16.htm" target="_blank">these guys</a>.

I don't know a thing about them, but $14 is a great price for a hat blank, and they have them in brown and tan (assuming your strictly trying to go Jack Sparrow. If you want black, there are LOTS of other companies to go with.) Just make sure to specify when ordering in the notes that you want a large brim. Their's seem to range from 4 to 8 inches, and I don't think 4 will quite give you the look you're seeking.

Ah, excellent link, Bilgemunky! That's just the style I was thinking of. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> Looks like they will make a nice tricorn with no problem! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Heh, Im back from holiday !

Thanks for all the good advice and links and all !

I've decided to make the hat myself !

Al though im still checking to see if I can find a danish shop to buy a blank hat or even the jack sparrow hat !

But if I make the hat out from a cowboy hat, in wool, from Bilgemunky's link, will it still look good even if its not leather ?

Given that hats of that era were indeed tarred felt, you should be fine. Leather hats were <i>very</i> rare. I bought a leather hat simply because I know how to weather leather without destroying it. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Perhaps this thread should be moved to the Blind Parrot, since it deals with historical garb instead of frivilous gaming talk?

If you take a close look at some of the non-production (candid) photos, you'll see that Sparrow's hat is most likely an approximation of tarred felt, which would be accurate, and not leather.

I went for the leather hat because I know how to age leather without destroying it.
