yes, and silehard helped as well, i guess. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> the 'cutting down' of the ship was in fact removing the entire top deck, which i read somewhere else.

Yeah, it's called razing. The rationale behind removing top deck is that with ship sizes increasing, older line ships could no longer participate in naval battle with reasonable chance of survival, but, as ships of lesser types, they had adequate armament and size to perform their newly downgraded duties.

And, as far as I can tell, this approach was generally succesful.

Another type of razee were pirate ships - in this particular case, pirates would beach the vessels and remove most of the sterncastle and all the projecting forecastle, leaving original armament intact.

Third type of razee were classic cannon-carrying ships which had their cannons removed and replaced with cannon turrets. Obviously, this particular types of razee appeared in XIX century <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
