Weather Update At Sea

I just wanted to ask two things -

First, could we have a setting in either internalsettings.h or buildsettings.h that specifies how LONG between updates. This is so we can fine tune it ourselves, as i personally think the default time is too short. In the meantime, does anyone know what file governs this?

Second, is there any idea/plan on making the transitions more 'smooth', and if not, could someone consider looking at this?

I dont mean to be rude, but its a great feature that unfortunately is a little random and abrupt - a gradual shifting wind would be fantastic, and i think its in the realm of possibility.

The weather updates at the top of the hour. This is 12 minutes of real time. It's probably something that the engine handles and can't be changed, but I can look at it some time.

It might help to have the time continuously display on the HUD when you're on your ship. At least that way you know when to expect the next weather change.

Thanks hook, that is actually a good thing - all i have to do is slow down the time at sea variable, and the sea updates should take longer.

Any possibility of making them smooth though? Just think - the wind gradually shifts to a new heading and strength while the fight is taking place - or even prevailing winds.

That should do it nicely.

Just keep in mind that there will be situations where you're in a 3 knot wind trying to catch someone who is out of cannon range and you only have a half knot speed advantage. Or you find yourself somewhere you have to sail directly upwind and don't have room to tack. Waiting for a change of wind might not be as much fun in those situations.

It should be possible to change some code related to the weather update in AIShip.c. I am not sure how much it could be improved though. I agree it would be nice to see it work smoother, but I don't know how much is possible... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
