What Are Your Expectations For Pirates!?

Civrules

Landlubber
In my opinion, what we see so far is not very detailed and in depth about the game (movie and screenshot wise) and the playing atmosphere is not yet clear. That is ok obviously, I am not whining about more information; I am trying to get to a point.
The point is that from what I see so far, so early on, I get the sense that Firaxis and Atari will do a superb job. I think this will be a quality game (as other games they have created, such as Civ Conquests).

From my experiences, Firaxis nor Atari, have ever disappointed me.

So how do you think the game will turn out?

Awesome... Sid will not disappoint, and neither will Firaxis nor Atari - they know there's a big fan base waiting out here... And what I saw at E3 looked terrific... It's going to be the fun game we knew, and more and more and MORE! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I'm expecting it to be an `open-ended`, `non-linear`, swashbuckling romp on the high seas. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

But I also have an inkling that there will be a lot of repetitive scenes (fight the enemy captain, sneak around the town, swing on the rope etc) that will combine to make the game, and something about that is concerning me, but I'm still sleeping at nights at this point. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mellow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":|" border="0" alt="mellow.gif" />

From what I'd be see'n so far an what Catalina and others has said about this game,I'd it expect tew be a real pirate adventure wid more pirate type quests rather than werk'n fer de Governers <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

As long as they don't screw with the fencing, and make sure the graphics can be replaced (yes, including 3d models... but perhaps retain skeleton animations).

I am still satisfied playing the original Pirates! and so far, I have seen nothing which has made me want to play the new one instead.

Hello

I was wondering if u can do trading as well.
There is nothing mentioned about any trading system so far.

Yes, Rawoo, there will be trading! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

But you're right, they haven't said much about it...

Just a note of caution,

Atari is perfectly capable of disappointment! They left Dead Man's Hand adrift, without support, and killed a game that had a ton of potential. They released a version of it for download before the CDs shipped, and the patch was not compatable, so that half the folks that tried to play online weren't compatable with the rest.

Those of us who were hoping for the heir to Outlaws! were bitterly disappointed...

<!--`QuoteBegin-Sailor_Al`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Sailor_Al)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Atari is perfectly capable of disappointment![/quote]Didn't know about that one, Sailor Al, thanks for the mention. It is something to consider...

The only fears I have about the game is that it will to to `action-packed`.

The original pirates was a little bit booring (in a good way) sometimes...

Slow Sailing for hours made you really excited when something actually happened. I hope that they wont change this.

however I hope that 'our' betatester will make sure to fix this. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
Cause the early versions seems more `action-packed` than the original game.

DJ1,
You raise a really good point there, and I think it has to do with the overall balance of the game. Sailing around in the original Pirates was slow, especially in comparison to the games of today, and yet I still fondly remember being able to get lost in the Caribbean, and having to refer to the paper map that came with the game to try to figure out where the heck I was. (As cool as I thought the feature was, I never did figure out how to take a Sun sighting.)

At higher levels you could be blown way off course, and also having to deal with contending winds was difficult, sometime frustrating, (added an extra layer of suspense to whether you had successfully tracked the Treasure Fleet or the Silver Train.) and also the winds could blow your ship or fleet onto reefs where, unless you ships were shallow draughted, they would take damage or sink. (or both)

I can't tell you how many games that I have enjoyed, that have, to some extent, a level of tedium, almost like work, within them. While I am playing these games, I can't help but think; this must be regarded as a major shortcoming to those with a limited attention span, and probably has the effect of creating more "shooter" type games that rely on reaction and repetition to win them, over strategy, intuition, and sometimes, just plain old perseverance.

It must be very difficult for the game developers to find the right balance, and create a game that appeals to a large number of people, who will in turn buy it and recommend it to their friends, and I have to give credit to the Atari guys who are checking in to see what we are saying about this upcoming game.

Thanks DJ1 for bringing up this point, and I second you 100%. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

There is not a chance in hell that it won't be action packed.

Today's games aren't made to take a long time to play. They aren't deep and involving and they don't come with 300 page manuals, maps and keyboard overlays. You don't have to make tables with graph paper or walk into every wall to find a hidden door.

The reason is that the pace of living today is much higher than in the 80s. Jobs are much more stressful, everything is computerized and communications are blazing fast. People don't have time to spend weeks or months in front of advanced computer games anymore.

When was the last time you saw a deep game designed for age 30+ players? (Did Harpoon 2000 ever make it to market? I can't remember.) I believe that when the next generation shift happens (when the 80s gamers become senior citizens), we may see games which are slow paced again, and which require more than minimal thought.

Wow, that turned into a bit of a rant, didn't it? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />:

Yes. The life for most people are more stressful now but still you have time to play games if you want to. I dont believe that people work more now than ten years ago. actually I believe the opposit. The workingtime is continously decreasing for several groups (at least in the EU) which the union has worked hard for. At the same time I think that the stress level for people when working has increased cause everything is so much more efficient now adays. Another thing that make our lives more stressful is that all media channels have a much higher tempo. I guess this is a natural effect of the market economy.

When discussing games I dont believe that those who play FPS games spend less time on each game compared to someone who plays more slow paced games. Actually those who have time (teenagers) almost only play action packed games like Far Cry and Counter Strike while older people tend to play more slow games. That the action packed games rules the market has to do with that generally people enjoys those games more at the moment. It is a matter of taste but not time.....

I think it is a little bit strange that people play so much action games today. There are really need for more relaxing experiences. We have so many stressful hours during our day so why play stressful games as well on our sparetime??? The gameindustry gets more and more actionpacked though but Sim City 4 is a good example that you still can sell millions of copies with a really slowpaced game.....

about the speed issue in Pirates I hope they will have speedoptions included. Cause then both the action and adventure people will be satisfied.

There are a ton of interesting things about this game that I think will make it worthwhile and keep the gameplay at a high enough level that you'll want to keep coming back for more.

More missions to carry out, Pirates from history will be in the game and you can try to make it as the #1 Pirate! The game ages your player over time. He won't move as fast in his 40's as he did in his 20's. The more experienced Captains you face off against won't always be as easy to take down by aiming for their `knee-caps`. They try to trick you.

Items you pick up throughout the game could add bonuses to your players skills, information picked up through towns could significantly benefit your strategy.

Overall, from what I saw firsthand at E3 from Jeff and Barry, the game is going to blow everyone's socks off. These guys are all people who have played the game before. They are all FANS, building a game for the FANS! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_praise.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="icon_praise.gif" />

Using an `action-packed` game after a `stress-filled` day burns off steam, I think. (this coming from someone who usually does not play them, LOL!) I am older, and yes, it's true, I like games that make me think - RTS games are more my style - and puzzle games... I like a little action thrown in (for instance, Warzone 2100 has battle action but is all about positioning, strategy, and timing more than ballistics) for fun, but I DO like strategy and planning... The strategy of a sea battle is something that intrigues me.

I am really looking forward to what Pirates! will offer. Looked like an outstanding effort from all involved, when I saw it at E3. It's like William pointed out - it is being put together by people who played the game and enjoyed it - and that's got to be a good thing! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
