Who really makes the best prize captain?

When you look at your officers skill sets, it seems to me that the "First Mate" is really the worst choice for a prize captain or consort. The gunner or master make more sense. Perhaps someone should take a look at that. Perhaps an overall haul of officer types is needed. Afterall, Sea Dogs had the real Naval Professions, Mate, Master, Bosun, Carpenter, Gunner, Surgeon, Purser, Quartermaster, (was their a sailmaker, I can't remember? There might even have been a cox'n).

If someone could take a look at increasing the number of "equiped officers" we could add more specialized types. Of course, it would also need a more exact skill set, instead of maxing out at 10, perhaps 20 or 30. Instead of a 30 in melee being 3 times as good as the current 10, the new 30 is the same as 10. Am I being clear? This way, you could have all of those officers and still have a realistic crew.

Usually when I hire an officer, I don't pay a lot of attention to what he claims is his job title - the skills I look for are whether he has any sailing ability at all, what his accuracy, cannons, defense, and repair skill levels are, and how many points I have that I can work with to build them up the way I want them. Therefore, a good gunner might make a great prize captain if I give him good sailing skills points, or whatever...

What I think would be helpful is if there was a way YOUR levelup could give you some skillpoints you could assign to your officers - like training them or promoting them or whatever...

I think what you describe would not only call for a more scaled skillset (I mean what you describe <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> but also a broader and more defined skillset. Take the Morrowind skillset for example, not just "melee" but "long sword", "short sword", "blunt weapon" etc. There was someone working on that say a year back and I believe he posted screenshots on these forums. I think if you can find the guy who did that, he might still be interested in making something like that work.

And if you skillset is broader and more scaled, then you could add a dozen different officers and actually have a use for them.

You know, I haven't around for a year or so, and all of the sudden everyone starts spawning great ideas for mods! I should be absent more often <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

That is something I'd like to see, being able to "train" your officers the same way you can pay people around town to train you. It should be done by transfering to them your earned but unused skill points, which after you max out later in the game aren't worth anything to you anyway.

Or you could go to those random people who like to train you and have them train your officer, instead. Maybe send someone off to school and get him back a week later.

I think I'd like more ways to force you to stay in town and kill time, like officer training or weapon improvement through the 'smith, since I find myself only touching down in them to sell some crap, spend my pirate points on the governor, maybe give my wife/mistress a quick smooch, then I'm off again to gather more crap. There are probably a lot of areas I still haven't explored, and we're talking about adding more.

Very true. Although, I guess it is `self-evident` that in a sailing game shore leave is less than secondary. You are right to say that there should be more going on in the towns. Nathan had planned to create a system where wooing the governor's daughters would bring you into competition with other suiters, and possibly even duel them for her hand. I can only hope that Nathan is working on it or that it will be included in the PMT expansion.

Here's an idea, we have the "pirate hunting" generator where the governor asks you to dispose of the foes off shore... perhaps there could be a rumor generator that would create ship encounters too. Something to the effect of you hearing about a convoy of Spanish Galleons heading out of Isla Muelle to Cadiz within the fortnight, you go there, and you encounter a small group of heavy laden galleons under escort making way to leave port. You can imagine other sorts of encounters that could be generated.

To get back on topic though, doesn't "Shared XP" help? I usually get that right away, and then give it to all of my officers and it seems like the level up like crazy. Especially if you want to cheat and heave to in a storm.

You *can* duel with a rival suitor now, in the build, JMV...

And I think there is a rumor thing in the game, but it's when you talk to people in town. It's connected with the coasttraders and coastraiders mod, I think.

well I'll be a horses uncle! I can sure put my hoof in my mouth. I guess I should play more and talk less. Good to know.
