Although, if somebody has plans of 17th century brigs, brigantines or schooners (I don't know exactly, if there were any schooners built in 17th century), I would be very glad to get them. Because my next work after brigantine would be a brig. And if I won't find any plans of it until then, I'll have to draw a fiction 17th century brig plan, according to my own knowledge of ship building of that time.

don't count on finding a 17th century brig. i doubt it existed. the first recorded brigantine, however, was built in 1669 in sweden, but i don't have it's name. brigs came a while after that, probably around the turn of the century after.

Hello rider88,

If its ok, i would like to have the plans for the Wasa. I like galeons.
After my current project she would be great.

the only plan of a brig i have, is the olympus. one sheet in very poor quality. And false timeframe, i thing.

Give me your e-mail, and I'll send you the plans. Please, send me the plan of Olympus in return. I'd like to look at it.

I believe Morgan is correct, although several of my sources cite the origin of the brig being from the 17th century. I however have never been able to find reliable illustrations or plans to back that up. I have found illustrations of a few ships NOT classified as brigantines that look much more akin a fully rigged brig that are 17th century vintage, with different names. Classification was very sketchy in the 16th and 17th century, and so whose to say there wasn't a brig built , but called something totally different. For example I have a couple of very detailed illustrations of "snow-rigged" sloops that look every shred like a later brig, that date from between 1690 and 1710. This is interesting in itself when you consider that the common rig for a sloop or sloop of war from the 17th century was a small three masted ship, (which really performed the commensurate work of the later brigs as tenders, couriers, etc for fleets of the 17th century). These ships were also sometimes called "galleys" even though this is a total misclassification only given because in some cases they carried oars and were pierced for oar ports. We would classify these ships now as 6th rates or unrated.

There are numerous small ship designs that survived the 16th century and were used well into the 17th (some examples also having only two masts). The urca and patache for instance would make lovely ship models for our games. I wish I had plans. Some other small 17th century designs that would be fun, would be the three masted sloop (which we have one classified as a "yacht" but it's not very good - Craiggo's retexture is better, but still a new one would be nice) also 17th cent herring-bus or snow would also be neat.

Sadly few plans survive of regular working ships of this time. The Flickr set I'm still putting together of all the small 6th raters and unrated illustrations is mostly pics of old models, paintings, washes, and drawings (lots of Van de Velde), but very few actual plans unfortunately.

I should have it finished and up by next week. I do love that you want to tackle small 17th century craft - an area we are lacking in. With Pgargon's Dutch Pinnace, Fregatte Berlin, and Nonsuch (ketch) we have a few more, but need more. Thanks for your work on this.

i've always wanted to see the sovereign of the seas myself. that thing is massive. i think it had it's upper deck razed at some point, but i might be confusing it with a different ship here.

we already have a snow. but it's an ugly bugger, so i wouldn't mind another one. keep in mind though that there is a very specific distinction between a snow and a brig, and that is an extra mastpiece astern of the main mastpiece. it's so it can carry both a gaff and a mainsail on the same mast.

there is a plan for a snow of 1744 in my ftp folder if anyone is interested in replacing the current one. it might be a little too new for what you are looking for though :shrug

As for a plan of the 17th century brig, I believe it is impossible to find one, you're right. Then show me the plans and drawings of all two masted vessels of that time, which can be used as replacements for brig. Although, I'm thinking about a replacement of schooner. Maybe it should be a ketch? Something bigger than Nonsuch, with 12-20 guns?

if you're going to use a similar design and use it as a brig, don't call it a brig. give it it's proper name and put it in the game that way.

I wouldn't. First of all I need a plan... Or some drawings to make a plan and to create a model. The name and description can be changed in minutes. BTW, there is still a lot of work to do on a brigantine which I want to finish before starting anything else.

Small update:
Acquired plans of the ships of Abel Tasman, Heemskerck (sloop of war, 20 guns, 1638) and Zeehaen (fluyt, 4 guns, 1639). The quality of plans and graphics is very high.

The Royal Louis was a 17th century ship? cool.

I've also suggested that ship a while ago too. hopefully someone will make it someday.

I also vote on making the HMS Prince and La Capricieux

I also would like to see a few more east indiamans make it into the game.

Also I'd like to see some more 2nd rate lineships in the 90-98 gun range get into the game.

With that said I really hope someone tackles the Remus77 Christianus Sixtus in the near future.

There were at least two ships of the line in French navy named "Royal Louis" the first one was built in 1668 and the second one was late 18th century ship.
As for heavy frigates I'd vote for La Francois instead of La Capricieux. The first reason is that La Francois was bigger and better armed (40 guns), so she would be more suitable replacement for our stock 46 guns frigate; the second reason is the plans of La Francois are VERY detailed and are of extremely high quality; and for the third reason we already have Raa frigate which is very similar to La Capricieux in size and armament.

Here some impressions of the Hampton Court 1678: Page
