My Drawings, Old and New

Pieter Boelen

Navigation Officer
Administrator
Storm Modder
Hearts of Oak Donator
Once upon a past, I used to draw; especially with my old friends whom I lost already a long time ago.
I even had my own limited comic series for a while, featuring Captain Dol Fijn from the Animal Kingdom.

Then a few years ago, at Creative Therapy, I made some simple replications of Dutch Golden Age sailing vessels again.

Plus, last month on Frigate Shtandardt I quickly drew a thief for a card game the Second Officer was in the process of making.
My drawing got replaced by someone else's more fanciful one, but I'm still proud of it.
Where my secondary school pirate had his tricorn floating aside from his head, my new thief DOES have the thing actually ON his head.
Plus, I find the comic book facial expression quite entertaining.

I hope you fine folks might find something to appreciate here also!
I do have more at home I could post some other time, but that's going to have to wait for now...

THIS thief.
Had to make a new post because the admin settings apparently allow only 12 attachments per post.

I'm sure I could change that if I'd want to.
But not today...

From the archives of my dear aunt in Amsterdam, who was kind enough to let me sleep on her couch during the SAIL Amsterdam event.
Drawings from when I was maybe 5 years old.

I don't like much of it.
But the dinos are kewl.

img_20250213_143832605-2-jpg: a short, fat hull with a square sail on the foremast and spankers behind. It looks a bit like the barquentine from CoAS which recently found its way into NH, though that ship has the forward spanker on a mast of its own, a bowsprit, and some more sails.

img_20250213_143832605-jpg and img_20250717_140500063-jpg: give the thief a long coat, colour him in, then retexture one of the many PoTC models with a tricorne hat. Any of the "9Jd" variants, for example.

img_20240322_121713606-jpg appears to be img_20240209_124644058-jpg coloured in, but what have you done to the Dutch flag? :shock The stripes should be the same thickness. A flag with three horizontal stripes, middle stripe broader than top and bottom, would work better as a Spanish flag.

I am not a good artist.
I'll be the first to acknowledge that.

I drew it early in secondary school.
Looking at it with an expert eye now, I sincerely doubt a spanker on a fully square rigged mast makes all that much sense.
EXCEPT perhaps if you place that spanker on a small mast behind it, so it can move more freely and doesn't interfere so much with the standing rigging or the reys.
....
Did I just invent the Snow rig?

I'm definitely going to need a real life officer's coat for my Pirate Outfit.
But the picture is still very very fuzzy.

For sure though, I'll want golden buttons.
A "binnenzak" or two.
And navy stripes on the sleeves, two of them, one with a loop.
Because I have real life EARNED those, no matter what Holland America Line pulled for nonsense after that.

I give those stripes to Captain Dol Fijn now too.
Before I HALled, apparently for some reason I drew him as Third/Second Engineer, rather than Officer.
Well, THAT can't be right!
Oopsje.

Ordinarily I probably wouldn't have bothered, but for this:

The circles on that kit were wrong in the opposite direction - the outer ring, middle ring and centre spot were the same thickness, which they should not be. Being based on the Spanish flag, the yellow middle ring should be thicker than the red bits, as seen on the model. I had to buy separate decals to correct it, so that sort of mistake has cost me money!

No, because the snow brig has no spanker there. It was based on a normal square-rigged three-masted ship with square sails on the foremast and mainmast, and a spanker on the mizzen. As the type evolved, the mizzen moved closer to the mainmast and became smaller, and eventually ended up as the snow mast. So you'd need to lose the foremast spanker, put a mainmast in front of the mizzen which would then become the snow mast, and put a couple of square sails on the new mainmast.

Or just move the forward spanker onto a full size mast of its own, and then you have a barquentine. ;)

Incidentally, fb_img_1647209766909-jpg could be turned into a tattoo. I've already done something similar:
Squire of the Sea

So much PERFECTION!
I cannot be perfect.

Ouch!
My poor head!

Referring back to the filename is probably the only way to make sense.
But even then, it's REALLY hard to trace back.
Especially on my phone.

Now that I abandoned ship on my Discord Server in favour of @DH27 taking care of that vessel, I really hope I'll be able to finally head back away from my phone and onto a proper PC again.
It's been a BLOODY WHILE!

But...
I first still have to attend the Whitby Pirate Festival this coming weekend.
Life's become crazy busy especially these past two weeks.
I'm not complaining, but dear Quob, EASY it is NOT!

Are you aware I met BNH @Hammie and @Jack Rackham in person?
They even met each other, even if only for one short evening of overlap.
I spent much more time with either of them apart.
VALUABLE people, the BOTH of them!
Even if one works on B15 and the other remains stuck on the previous edition.
For now.
Or until now?

The picture you posted here would be fine for a tattoo. It only needs to be superimposed onto a character texture which is at most 1024x1024, it needs to fit onto the arm section which is a lot smaller than that, and the picture you posted is 481x547. So even that picture would need to be downscaled before being used for a tattoo.

Yes, I saw something about that in another thread.

I still don't know which picture exactly.
Either way, I don't like tattoos, so I wouldn't bother if I were you...

Ah, very good!
Important to try getting everybody on the same page.
Somehow... :cheers

This one:

OH!
Ah, THAT picture I do like with some measure of pride.
I drew it for the birth card of @TechnicJelle.
Physical drawing, OCR scan and coloured in MS Paint.

Pictured are Kapitein Dol Fijn and his cousin/nephew(these two are the same word in Dutch, so I can never figure out the difference) Mike Fijn.
Mike was my name suggestion when my parents told me they were pregnant.
Obviously that was ignored.

Except they agreed to call her Maaike if he'd have been a she.
Sorry, but that is NOT the same.
Mike sounds nice and cool.
Maaike though?
Less so, for me...
Even though it sounds similar in Dutch.

A cousin is a child of your aunt or uncle. Since your aunt or uncle are sister or brother to one of your parents, there's a reasonable chance that your cousin is somewhere around similar age to you. A nephew is a male child of your brother or sister, making you the nephew's uncle. (A niece would be a female child.) Unless there's a big age difference between you and your brother/sister, you're probably older than your nephew. Given the size difference there, Mike Fijn is more likely to be Dol Fijn's nephew.

The reason I suggested using the picture for a tattoo is that a game character needed one. This was the picture provided:
1741270792044-png.44980

And this was the result:

If not another tattoo, perhaps your picture could be used in the game for something else. The same technique used to superimpose the fish picture onto a character texture could probably be used to superimpose the dolphin picture onto a sail texture, for example. Or the stern art of a ship.

Headache difference.
But yeah, I think Hewey, Dewey and Louie are Donald Duck's nephews too.
That has obviously where I took the relation from.

Fun.

Wouldn't that be WOEFULLY historically inaccurate??
The style is like nothing from the time period at all.
Looks far too geometric and modern to me.
