A few quesitons from a noob

Jackolas

Landlubber
hi guys,
really enjoying the mod. Its awesome!
Just got a few questions.

Can i only buy the bigger/better higher rate ships when I have a higher sailing skill?

Is there a way to modify a file so I start with skills at ten?

How do I find the guy that sells the black pearl and the other special ships please? I heard I have to find mt gibbs in the tavern in tortuga. But i cant find tortuga on the map :( Simple instructions for a noob on how to get the awesome ships would be really great please.

Thansk so much

Jack

Tortuga is off the coast of Hispaniola ;)

To buy the navy ships you need to be a certain rank with the country :yes

Yes there is a way to modify your stats... changing any of these through the console will do it:
Code:
		PChar.skill.Leadership = 1;
PChar.skill.Fencing = 1;
PChar.skill.Sailing = 1;
PChar.skill.Accuracy = 1;
PChar.skill.Cannons = 1;
PChar.skill.Grappling = 1;
PChar.skill.Repair = 1;
PChar.skill.Defence = 1;
PChar.skill.Commerce = 1;
PChar.skill.Sneak = 1;
(so to get them to be ten change the 1 to a 10 then execute the console) [read forum FAQ on how to use the console ;)]

You need a higher skill level to buy bigger ships, but you can still capture them.
Note though that too big ships can temporarily decrease your sailing skills.

Tortuga is to the North of Hispaniola; go into 3D sailing mode there, then you should be able to find it.
If you use F2>Inventory>Maps>View Archipelago Map, you'll see a map that DOES have Tortuga on it.

thanks guys. i have th eocmpas and im at isle de merta but all i can find is a shore with a cave thats locked? am i looking in the right place?

There should be three shores. You need the one with the shipwreck on it.
Vanderdecken is inside there.

No it isnt :no

It can be bought off Vanderdecken who is on Isla De Muerte, which is unlocked by finding Gibbs

We dont tell people that, we say it is possible if they ask by finding a well known character in a well known place to go to another well known place to find Vanderdecken the unique shipyard owner... there was a reason I put it in spoilers

Before I got sent off to do Horatio Hornblower, I was looking for this Vanderdecken character everyone is talking about. Went to a famous place and met a famous bosun whom I hired. He gave me a broken thingy which indeed appeared to be broken. I wandered all over the place circumnavigating island after island with no luck. :shrug Then a large storm blew me far off course and there it was! :keith The first beach I visited was called "deserted beach" and has a bug. After checking out the rowboat and going up the path to the locked cave, back on the beach there is no way off unless you use the fast travel trick. I was only informed of that trick 2 days ago. Anyhoo. The next landing was golden. There is quite a selection of ships. Being a trader I was interested in large cargo capacity and small crew size, so settled on a galleon sight unseen. That is by far the most detailed ship I have sailed yet. :2up :onya Will be going back soon for another ship. :sail

i can confirm that bug at the beach. i think the locator for the sloop's missing or something.

The beach with the shipwreck indeed doesn't show your boat, but you CAN get back on your ship through the locator.
You just have to search for it, which still is quite inconvenient. :facepalm

That is true. The third beach called something "witch" is the only one with all locators.

To buy the navy ships you need to be a certain rank with the country :yes

How do you gain rank with the different countries? I've gone into several naval HQ's, and there's never anyone actually upstairs in the office. I've received a letter of marque from Britain, but I'm not entirely sure what that does...

I don't think anyone ever IS in the Naval HQ's, except in specific quests.
The letter of marque begins your promotion with that country! The more ships you sink on their behalf, the higher your rank becomes. So every now and then, you need to check back with the governor, and see if there's the option saying "I hear I'm up for promotion". He will then grant you a new title, along with some personal land (to give you a personal regular income). This also increases your reputation with that country, which is a bonus! :onya Once you get a high enough rank, you can buy navy ships from their shipyards.

Its easier to get a higher rank with a country by sinking ships that are of a nation enemy to the nation you are part of... for example if England and France are at war your better off sinking French ships rather than pirates to gain rank faster :yes

The naval HQ's are there solely for the purpose of the Hornblower storyline and don't yet have any other use.
