A question about difficulty

I just bought the game a few days ago and I'm having a blast! However, I can't seem to get to a higher difficulty beyond apprentice. The game gives me no option to start on a higher difficulty level, and when I divide the plunder it doesn't give me the option of changing it.

Other than that, the game runs very smooth for me, even with all the graphics turned up.

Your plunder has to meet a certain amount to progress to the next level. I don't know the exact amounts.

Ah thats what I kind of figured. I don't remember seeing that in the manual. I might have missed it.

Start the game, load your old saved game and then choose Abandon game.

Then create a new character and you should be able to gain access to the screen that lets you choose a new level of difficulty.
