A Question to the Beta Testers

First_Mate_Otto

Landlubber
I would assume that 3 days from release, any NDA that may have been in effect is no longer so. I was just wondering, as I read in some review somewhere (perhaps on IGN, I don't recall) that the average amount of time that it took to complete a game was about `6-8` hours???!

I really hope that this is <i> not </i> the case, as I'm a pretty hardcore gamer and the games that I'm used to playing usually take me at least 90+ hours. That's the way I like it and I'm hoping the reviewer was wrong.

Please let me know what the case is, thanks in advance for your replies.

<i> Edit: I'm a <b> Landlubber???! </b> LMAO, that's awesome! </i>[/i]

errr 90 hours? What kind of games are these?

Pirates doesnt really have an end because it has a career mode. And of course the different time periods and so an. There are many different things you can try to achieve in one game but you need practice to do so.
Thats why you can play it over and over again.

Otto - this topic has been chewed up quite a bit on these boards. I advise you to check out some of the other threads on the topic and maybe even take a look at Civrules' article on Cutlass Isle I think.

The `6-8` hours thing is kinda old info. The game can last much longer depending on how you play it. Most importantly, the replay value of the game is very high, so that even once you do "finish" a career, you turn right back around and start another. If you have no interest in playing a second career after you finish your first one, then Pirates! really is not the game for you.

Well the game does have a life span, it will probably last more than 8 hours, but dont think this is morrowind on water <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

No, the `6-8` hour thing was a result of the testing phase. During testing, they advanced aging so that your pirate's career would progress faster to give more test coverage. At least I remember something like that being said on the beta boards... any other testers remember something like that?

I believe you're misunderstanding my post. I'm not trying to start a flame war or anything like that regarding `6-8` vs. `90-100`,000 hours. I was merely asking if this was correct. Apparently, it's somewhere in that area, although I seem to remember the original Pirates! being a much longer game than that. I could be mistaken, as it was the first game I ever played on a computer that didn't involve text, and that was a long time ago.

Regardless, I've heard that some of you are quite adept at making mods and I'm wondering if any of you have plans on attempting to make a mod that makes aging go more slowly in the game.

I will be buying this game regardless, although I really don't like the idea of replaying the same game over and over with minute variations of cities here or there or controlled by one faction or another. But like the mod said, it's not going to be Morrowind.

Lastly, I apologize if I'm rehashing anything here, but I really don't have the time to search through all the posts on these forums and find answers. If it bothers you to reply to my questions, then please do us both a favour and don't bother.

If anybody can come up with something that TOTALLY stops AGING in the game that would be perfect <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> , however I think the game have adopted some ideas from Cutthroat Island game . <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Maybe it was all the time waiting for the 1541 disk drive. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Oh gosh yes... that confounded 1541 drive! I can hear it spinning up now <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Didn't mean to offend Otto. Just did not want to rehash the topic too much for the regular readers and the moderators are usually pretty good about keeping the dual threads to a minimum. I'm not sure about the modability of the aging process. To me it would really unbalance the game. I think Civrules' article <a href="http://www.cutlassisle.com/forwarder.html?http://www.cutlassisle.com/articles/insiderarticle/index.html" target="_blank">http://www.cutlassisle.com/forwarder.html?...icle/index.html</a> mentions something about the modding of that function but I did not reread it to check - try the link above. It's a great article and will keep you busy until you get your copy <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I have a question for the betatesters too.

When you have won a battle against a pirate. Which options will be available for you then?

I remember that in original Pirates the following options were

* Ask about treasure Fleet
* Ask about Silver Train
* Hold him for ransom

You can keep the ship or sink it.

I don't remember there being ransoms in the beta ...

But you can find special crew members that can seriously `beef-up` how you do things.

Is there different types of cannon with each has different range , damage and reloading time ?? Are they restricted to ship type like you can't have 32 pounder in lower class ship and so on ??

No, all cannon are alike. You can upgrade to bronze cannon which give you longer range. Load time depends on the number of crew you have as well as whether you have the "gunner" special crewman.

As far as I know all cannons are not supposed to be alike. In that article of questions that Cutlass Isle has, it is sais that even though you don't have different bores for cannons, the cannons on larger ships are more powerful.

I don't know how true that is, but that's what they at Firaxis claimed...

hmmm... never got that impression from the beta or any of the beta discussions. Doesn't mean it ain't so. I will say that a fully armed frigate packs a punch - but then, so does my royal sloop with 20 guns.

Yeah, I miss Blackbeard's vessel. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />
