About to install...

Hey everybody. I'm about to install the game... I haven't played it since it first came out, I never modded it before (I'm sailing uncharted waters so to speak.. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" /> ). I'm curious about Build 13, is there a list somewhere of exactly what it changes? Sorry if I missed something on the forums. Is it all gameplay changes, or are there graphic improvements, quests, new lands? I've modded games like Morrowind and Oblivion, not sure if the process is similar. I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance!

I think it's safe to say that everything you see or do in the game has been changed in some way or other. You probably wouldn't recognize it as the same game.

I recommend skipping Build 13 and getting the latest Build 14 when Pieter updates it this weekend. It should be fairly stable (probably no worse than Build 13 Final) by now, and although there are still some things missing the game is solid. Build 14 adds too much good stuff to the game, and I couldn't go back to Build 13 after playing it.

Gameplay changes, new quests, whole new quest lines where you play a different character (you can be Horatio Hornblower, for example), new islands on the map, new characters, an entirely new interface, better sailing and ship combat, reasonable weather, almost all the graphics have been changed and improved, the list goes on.

Edit to add: If you enjoy sailing you can sail between islands without ever using the worldmap. There's an optional new skilling system that assigns skill points as you do things that would increase that skill, rather than assigning them manually. You can visit the deck of your ship and move between the hold, crew quarters and deck in a natural manner.

The game includes a huge variety of ships now. Some new weapons have been added. You don't have to stop playing when you complete the last quest, or you can ignore the quest entirely. There's an option to ignore Malcolm during the tutorial and just leave, ending up on some random shore without much of anything to help you, called Stormy Start.

The towns are populated with a variety of people you can talk to, get your pocket picked or pick someone else's pocket. Wandering merchants can have some very good stuff available.

Goods are priced high enough that buying and selling cargo makes reasonable money. You can be a trader or a privateer, as you wish. The governor will give you quests to sink specific ships. You can buy treasure maps and hunt for buried treasure, which may or may not be there. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Lots of piratey stuff to do.

Welcome to the forum and enjoy the new game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

To Hook you listen! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
But Alpha 9 is not going tobe this weekend; I just don't have enough time to compile and upload such a huge file today. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />
Most likely, I WILL try to release it next weekend. It's been delayed enough! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

Thanks for the welcome and the quick reply! I think I'll install Build 13 so I can get a feel for whats going on and upgrade when the next update is up.

Do I need anything else besides Build 13? I can't find any official patches or anything else from Bethesda. Oh, and are there any problems running the game on Vista?

Sounds like a good idea to me. There's no official patches, except some Polish ones that are included in Build 13.
If you install Build 13, be sure to install <a href="http://s31clan.com/privateftps/pietersmods/others/midnight_fullcargohold_ctdfix_b13.zip" target="_blank">this file</a> afterwards; it fixes one of the worst issues still left there:
a crash to desktop that occurs when your cargo hold is full (eg after plundering an enemy fleet).

The game does run on Vista, but I do recommend you don't install to Program Files;
it seems the overkill on security measures in Windows Vista tends not to like a modpack installation file to write to Program Files or something like that.
I have it in C:\Games\Pirates of the Caribbean and that works fine.

That seems to be good advice for any game on Vista. Thanks for your help guys.

I think I'm ready to set sail... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Link has been fixed now. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
