Age of Pirates Gameplay Movie

I must say that I, ahem, prefer the look of Beatrice as it is in the movie, over the representation of Anne Bonney provided above. I would not, however, appreciate topless heroines running around the game - that would spoil the mood of the game for me.

I wonder if Anne Bonney was really not-that-good-looking, or if it was the way the period artists made females, who had chosen the wrong path, look ugly - just to point out that crime is bad and criminal women are, by definition, ugly?

As I've already noticed in the previously released screenies, I don't like the anime-ish look of the main characters, but the rest of the game looks... woooow! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

The same illustrator did the same kind of illustration for Mary Read - and those illustrations were not done until far past the time those women were actually living, so who really is to know what they actually looked like?

I rather like this illustration - <a href="http://www.cranstonfinearts.co.uk/dhm974.htm" target="_blank">Anne Bonney, Mary Reid and Calico Jack Rackam by Chris Collingwood</a> - and prefer to think they looked something like this instead of that engraving of Anne I posted earlier.

I'd love to own one of these prints... AFTER I get a nice giclee of Anry's illustration of <a href="http://www.zazzle.com/contributors/products/product/product.asp?cid=238264723119556421&caching=on&product%5Fid=228082570302688081&index=4" target="_blank">Beatrice,</a> that is... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> (wish he had some of the other pirate-related stuff on his site here!)

Cat, the "bare bosomsed and in hot pants" thing is in the movie outakes.

Liza:"So, I guess it will be bare breast, and ankles all the way!"

Norington: "ppfft! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> Anles all the way! Hahaha!"

Just looked at the movie again. Is it just me or does Akella still have trouble with the relative sizes of the men and the ships? It seems as if the crew is made of ants swarming around on a humoungous ship...

Keith,

I can hear it but I can't see it. When I strat the download, I get a codec error, any ideas?

That was the same with me. Download the thing on the link Fred Bob gave before. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Also Rupertlittlebear pointed out that the gunsmoke hangs in the air although it should be blown away by the wind (since the ships are moving along the wind as well)...

Minor problems those (gunsmoke and miniature crew / gigantic ships), but it would be nice to see them fixed...

Heh, another bug in build 12, though I find it a funny one, is that people still climb the non-existant rigging of fallen masts. I find that REALLY funny, it made me chuckle for quite a few hours of gameplay.

Hmm... I hope they have fixed the ghost riggings then in this version. Should not require a great feat of programming, after all...

<!--QuoteBegin-nachinus+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(nachinus)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->As I've already noticed in the previously released screenies, I don't like the anime-ish look of the main characters...<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Same for me. Anime is Japanese and doesn't fit in with pirates whatsoever. Not that I very much like anime anyway; it's waaay overused these days. There's hardly any cartoon that doesn't look like anime and it all looks the same to me.
Ah... The rest of the game's looks are GREAT! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Whats with the running lights at the end of the yard arms? They dont even look like lanterns, they look exactly like electrical lights. That totally ruins it for me, I hope that can be modded out.

Yes, I think it was Cat who said it made it look like a Christmas Tree.

Some anime is okay..ish, but I really dont like the rest at all. I think we should be able to put a tailor's shop in AoP, as that would help.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->They dont even look like lanterns, they look exactly like electrical lights.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Perhaps it's because they are <a href="http://www.physics.northwestern.edu/classes/2001Fall/Phyx135-2/17/whatisstelmosfire.html" target="_blank">electrical lights</a>. I think it's Akella's attempt to implement St Elmo's fire. Except that they have it at wrong times and it's also said to look different.

Hi Gang,

I have to whine, but I still haven't seen the film. I downloaded it to my laptop last week but couldn't play it. Now I can't find it download to my desktop. Can anyone send me a working link?

Thanks.

Jason, I just checked the link and it does work, id suggest using a DL manager <a href="http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/" target="_blank">http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/</a> is what i use <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Another thing about the video though, I think Akella are trying to find the happy medium for gammers, between the realists and the people who just enjoy the romp though the sea in their "boat"

Im pretty happy from what i saw as most of the niggly things could be taken out pretty quickly <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Mind you im basing this on the 15-20 sec of footage ive had time to see aswell <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

Correct me if Im wrong, but isnt St Elmo's fire supposed to be more electrical blue sorta looking? Im probably thinking of that phenomenon (do doo de do doo- Irn Bru ad) that goes on planes as they fly too close to volcanic smoke.

If you check out Seabro's link, it says its a phenomenon that happens after lighting storms and has rarely been seen by man. I tried doing a google search on St Elmos fire and only got links for that lame 80s movie. Does anyone know what Akellas explaination is for those lights? Is that really supposed to be St Elmos fire?

Perhaps they were feeling chrismassy! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xmas.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":xmas" border="0" alt="xmas.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I think it's their way of making the ships more visible at night, for night battles. Less could have done that just as well, IMO.
