Anybody figured out dancing?

Trevanian

Landlubber
The easiest levels show you which number to hit when you dance. That stops when you move up a few levels.

I can't figure out what the next move is going to be. I tried watching the women to pick up clues, but can't.

Am I missing something super obvious?

Well, just follow the womans `hand-movements`. Keep an eye on here hands, and you'll see she points you in the direction you're supposed to go. It's not that hard, really. The principle of it, I mean.

Good thing you can get dancing boots so it's easier to impress the ladies. I kinda like the dancing, it's a nice distraction from the killing and plundering.

I havent played the game and I think dancing is a great add as well....

I dont understand those who claim that it just doesnt fit a pirate game.

That is what makes the original so great. That things such as romance are included in a 'wargame'... Thats at least my opinion... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

The romance is not what is out of place. The fact that it boils down to a `more-difficult`-`than-need`-be mini game where you just push direction buttons.

Ah, but the better you dance, the more likely you are to get some really great GIFTS from the lady... It's a skill you need to acquire items you might not easily find from the stranger in the tavern... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I'm playing on my laptop so I don't have the number keypad. Thus I'm forced to use the mouse. The best way I've found is to watch ONLY the keypad icon in the lower right. It's like playing Simon. Watch for a direction button to light up and click on it as fast as you can. I began my first dance atrociously, but by the end of the minuet I was good enough to kiss her hand!

<!--QuoteBegin-galeninjapan+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(galeninjapan)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->The dancing `mini-game` is dumb. It it so out of place.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Well, you can always choose to "beat a hasty retreat" when asked to the ball. If you don't like to do it, you don't have to.

I like dancing. It's a nice little `mini-game` and I find it a challenge.

For those on laptops, I can imagine your frustration. I would have to buy a USB keyboard for that purpose!

Yeah, that doesn't do that when you move up to a more difficult level.

I know...I'm dreading it. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> No need to get a USB pad tho, I can just remap the keys to WSAD or something.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that I've figured it out but here are a few items that I've noticed:

1) Moves often appear to come in patterns of four moves with the last two tending to mimic the first two in the sequence. For example, if she steps to the right then to the left, the next two steps will be the same.

2) Sequences that include a pirouette left or right seem to repeat until you return to the original facing (with dear ol' Dad in sight) or be mirrored in the next set of four steps, which achieves the same result.

3) If your partner steps back at the beginning of a sequence, this will probably be followed by a series of pirouettes (left seems to be the favored direction).

4) Listen to the music, this may help you to anticipate when she is going to signal her next step.

5) The game seems to me to become more forgiving as you go up in rank.

6) If you are quick enough, you can "correct" a move before the end of the step.

These don't work for me all the time but I'm able to impress the beautiful lasses (in the game) well over 75% of the time, without the dancing shoes. I have only played at the first two difficulty levels so I don't know whether the moves get more complicated as this increases or whether it just speeds up.

Good tips. Thanks! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

According to the manual, you "win" at dancing by accomplishing "flourishes." The best way to do this is by making your movements in time with the music, always at the first beat of the measure. I know it's corny, but I literally tap my fingers in time with the music and think "`ONE-two`-`three-ONE`-`two-three`," where each "ONE" is a button push. Works the same for songs with four beats per measure. If you don't get a flourish every time, it's not a huge deal, although it helps to get as many as you can in a row. The most important thing, of course, is just to look at her hand movements and not mess up.

Aye,it'd be like 'ave'n two left feet,course it'd probly help putt'n down me flask O' snakebite <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

The simple patterns are pretty simple. They usually work in 4's.

Some I've noticed are (on numberpad):
6,4,6,4 (right,left,right,left)
4,6,4,6 (left,right,left,right)
3,3,3,3 (back right x 4)
1,1,1,1 (back left x 4)
8,1,1,8,1,1 (forward, back left x 2; twice)
6,1,6,1,6,1,6,1 (right, back left; 4 times)
4,3,4,3,4,3,4,3 (left, back right; 4 times)

It can be tricky to tell their motions depending on where their hands are. When their hands start behind their backs, their directions are more obvious. When they're at the sides, it's more subtle.

One P.C. thing I've noticed is that all the goveror's daughters start at "plain". But barmaids appear to be missing teeth. Maybe that isn't so P.C. afterall...

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

What do you mean "start at plain"? Shame about the barmaids... she's so well... equipped, aside from that <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

The part driving me more nuts than before is, at Rogue level, when the are swinging their arms before they give you the hand gesture. I have a hard time figuring out if it's a Pirouette or a Glisse. Wearing a ring, ostrich feather, dancing slippers, and I think I have a diamond necklace, I still have a hell of a problem with this part of the game! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

Hmm, I wonder. What are these pirouettes? I know what a pirouette is, but I've never used these buttons (7 and 9) yet. I've always just used forward, backwards, `back-left`, `back-right`, left and right. The turn left and turn right has never been in use in my case, and I can't see how I'm supposed to. I've tried pressing them but they don't do anything. Also, I always seem to impress the girl, and I rarely stumble. And I do pirouettes too, I always thought it was something about the timing, or if pirouettes are done automatically.

It's getting weirder and weirder.

I meant their appearance descriptions range are either plain, attractive, or beautiful. I thought it was quite P.C. that they didn't have "hideous" in that category.

From what I've seen, the major factor distinguishing "plain" from "beautiful" is the amount of cleavage they're showing.

In the same (perverse) way, it'd be neat if your character could be disfigured by a horrific fencing performance (or by a thoroughly unimpressed dance partner for that matter).
