Anyway to speed up land battles?

Just bought the game, quite enjoying it. Except for land battles - they are so very slow! Each unit needs a command which is fine but it takes about 10seconds for each group to walk from one square to the next. So if I have 8 unit groups (about 250 men) it can take literally minutes to do a turn!

Very slow, ended up retreating to get out of it. I wonder if it is my system except that the land exploration stuff works fine, and the combat and dancing etc is as fast as I would want. So although I'm running an old Athlon 1.8 with 256 meg and a 64 video, I can't see why the land combat would be slow.

Is there an option somewhere where when I say to a unit 'go forward' it just appears in the square rather than walking (slowly) to it? There is often a straggler too which is pretty annoying when you're waiting for the men to get a move on.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers,

I don't think it's anything to do with your system, since the land battles don't appear to be 3D rendered but look like sprites instead.

Anyway, the ship battles are the most graphic intensive part of this game, with the arcade scenes a distant second.

Don't they kinda of limp to the next square? They are swaggering and limping to kill time I guess or the land battles would go too quick.

Fun part be in outsmartin' de AI an' gittin' yer men around tew de towne wall! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Actually, one of the little details I really loved about land battles was how all the soldiers are like lined up and look disciplined and steady as a rock, while the pirates are just scattered around not in any particular formation and tend to crick their necks or fidget alot. Pretty cool.

The best way I found to make the land battles go faster is by zooming in closer with the mouse wheel. Speeds things up immensely, but you don't get to see the whole battlefield that way either.

And, yes, I love sneaking a unit around to the city gate. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Might sound silly, but it be 3 or 4 land battles gone by befer Fred Bob figgered out what de Ctrl an' Shft tabs on de screen meant! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> Wondered why me Buc'neeers be shootin' de wrong way! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> Once Fred Bob discovered ye don't click on dem tabs but ye press de Shift an' Ctrl keys fer de alternate menus, thangs be smooth sailin' fer land battles! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Speeding things up

Hi

Yes thanks for your help everyone, it is a graphics thing - at the beginning there is a lot of map to render (don't know why cos you can see that detail anyway, this game is slightly unfinished in several ways).

Mouse wheel suggestion is excellent.

Otherwise I timed it it takes 28 seconds to move a unit one step. Bit too slow to be fun.

WOW! Yeah, I'd say that's WAY too slow. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />
