blue bird quest

leongt

Master Mariner
What's the crew size of the xebec because I have a sloop with 72 men and I'm at level 3 and when I board her I'm getting killed all the time, I've no sooner drawn my weapon when I've got about 5 or 6 pirates around me and all my men dead.

Stats are random, but possible crew size is something around 230 or so. Not counting overload.
You need a bigger boat!
Or a lot of patience, luck and good maneuvering to grape shot her down before she blows you out of the water... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

Ok thanks, This ship would not have been a problem for me in potc or aop guess this ship has changed

That won't save you, since once you deal with the crew you still have to kill the captain... and he's got the Wasp (or at least I think that's what the sword was called in AOP), a ton of health, and that perk that gives him a 20% chance to hit you through the block...

Would have been a good idea to add you need a big ship to beat this little ship and be at a high level before attempting this quest in the walkthrough post? Also is it possible to finish this quest if I damage his sails and run away because his sails are the only thing I can damage

No, you'll get a logbook entry that the Bluebird got away and you will fail the quest.
You can, however, sink it and complete the quest. The xebec is a one of a kind ship, though, and if you sink it or let it get away you will never see another like it.

I managed to damage his sails by three quarters and then used 200 cannon ball to no effect it seems on his hull or crew so it looks like I'll ether have to start a new game and make sure I'm at a high level with a lot bigger ship or forget about this quest

No but I haven't got far into the game after putting the frigate into storage and buying the sloop and no harm done.

Money usually aint the problem in early games if you do some decent plundering, lack of navigation skill is.
You can try what I did - reload until a shipyard offers a caravel with decent stats to start with (highest possible speed and maneuverability, at least 16lb cannon) and upgrade it at Bermuda.
Not cheap, but you will get a very powerful class 5 ship early in game (30x24lb cannon, large crew, huge cargo hold) that has no problem going against class 3 or even class 2 ships.
I used such a little beast against the Bluebird and won easily... later on I used the Bluebird myself until I could switch to the stored frigate but I kept that caravel a very long time in my fleet as companion training ship and cargo hauler.

hello <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> I boarded the ship and the store owner refused to give me the money. I already have sunk about 4-5 trader ships for the revenge but the quest still continues.... Does this trade ships haunting have an end?

Counted only ships that are available in the logbook, "easy prey".

yes, they were quest ships.... I even spoke to the captains of two of them and told them to "say hello" to the poor shop owner... So how long should I do this?

I think at least 7-10

Are you supposed to sink the ships or just board them, plunder them, and then let them go? (which I assume you can do if you don't remove the captain after he surrenders, but I never tried...)
Also, do all nations' ships count? The merchant who assigned me the quest is English and I really don't want to mess up my relation with England by raiding its shipping.

you can't let the ship go. After the dialogue with the captn you gave him the opportunity to save his life with lifeboats and after that u sunk his ship <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
