Build 13 update vs Build 14

Since we have started on the Sparrow Search bughunting project, I have been wondering about making an update for Build 13 including the latest stable mods. I would like to make such an update when it becomes feasable, but I also don't want to put too much in this update so that Build 14 will hardly be a major upgrade. That is why I have been wondering on which mods could be put in a Build 13 update and which ones should be left for Build 14.

Personally I think that everything that is an improvement of things already in Build 13 could be added and everything that is completely new should be left until Build 14 (with a few exceptions). So I would think:
- Improved town locations: <i>Build 13 update</i>
- New non movie-related quests: <i>Build 13 update</i>
- New movie-related quests: <i>Build 14</i>
- DirectSail mod: <i>Build 13 update</i>
- Napoleonic ships and characters: <i>Build 14 (with toggle)</i>
- Other ships and characters: <i>Build 13 update</i>

Any other thoughts on this? It might be a bit early in the process of bughunting, fixing and cleaning things up to start any work on this, but we might as well start up the discussion now so that we might have some answers by the time we can actually make the Build 13 update.

BTW: How should we call the Build 13 update? I was originally thinking to call it Build 13.1, similar in naming to Build 12.1. However, since Build 13 Update 3 is sometimes referred to as Build 13.3, this might be confusing. So instead I would opt for Build 13.5 to make it clear that it is a new version with quite some new stuff, but not quite Build 14 yet/
 
Can't help really much here, because I'm not sure whats working as intended, what's causing complications, etc.

All I can say is, that afaik the new Quests are still being coded. So I think they should be "tested" in another version, if you want 13.5 to be a solidly playable version. But wow, I think I really can't help on that one, since I dont have a clue about what's to be done where :p

OK, so we're basically setting the scope of the Sparrow Search bug quashing effort here.

From your post above, it looks like we'll be adding the following in SS project:

- DirectSail mod: <i>Build 13 update</i>
- Improved town locations: <i>Build 13 update</i> - <b>is there a complete list?</b>
- Other ships and characters: <i>Build 13 update</i> - <b>is there a complete list?</b>

What about these:
- New weapons from SLiB mod: <i>Build 13 update</i> or <i>Build 14</i>

And I assume that all "new" functions/features will be saved for Build 14?

I'm for whatever naming convention makes sense and doesn't cause confusion.

Maybe SJG has some good ideas for a name for the bug-fixed version 13?

The movie-related quests are still being coded, but there's a couple fo finished quests by Bartolomeu as well, such as the Bartolomeu quest, Turks Help, Santiago quest, Moulin quest, etc. These could be added into the Build 13 update.

Regarding a name for the new / debugged/ some additions included, version of Build 13.x I would suggest the following:

Pieter, you are quite correct in the confusion in the Build 13 series of numbers. I still have to double check when going from one version to another. (O.K. I'm not that smart <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> )
and at the least Build 13.5 is a better solution.

However, at the risk of putting the cat amongst the pigeons, I would suggest that as part of the publicity campaign we consider those we are trying to attract.
The numbers, for existing new, and new new members, continue to be confusing.
So how about naming it - I don't have a particular favourite but suggest "Sparrow's Story" for the 13.5 version.
(This is based on the logic of our debug program currently at Sparrow Search which will probably go on to Sparrow Sought - Sparrow Safe as it progresses and is upgraded)
This could lead into "New Horizons" for the 14.x new version.

"Sparrow" indicating basic upgrades (before the film) from the original and "New Horizons" indicating a new (into the film and on) improved game completely.
Again, I only suggest these names - the actual names can be determined later.

But, I do believe that it will be far easier for people to grasp which mod is what when they make a download choice.

Also, publicity again, "Pirates of the Caribbean -Sparrow's Story" and "Pirates of the Caribbean - New Horizons" will have far more appeal to new (and old) players alike, indicating that something really special has gone on here (which of course it has).

True. It does include the Black Pearl though, so if we replace the stock game's Pearl with the new one, perhaps we can call it something like "Myth of the Black Pearl". It would be a bit odd to come up with a new name halfway into the Build 13 development though. I think it should just be named "Build 13.5" or something like that. This to stick with the established naming convention until Build 14 which will get a seperate name. This would also save us the trouble of having to add the "Sparrow's Story" name to the game's menu's and loading screens.
 
13.5 is a more rounded number. 13.4 could suggest that there is a 13.5 to come. But I want to make ONE more update for Build 13 and the next official release should be Build 14.

That is VERY true. The Build 13 update MUST be STABLE and FINISHED.

I updated my previous post to add the character models list. Tomorrow I will upload a new Alpha 8 WIP game version for modders including all RESOURCE files you might be missing.
