Capturing / Raiding Settlements

Ahoy me hearties. I got me self a problem.

Well, I recently got CoAS and now I confidently tried to assault a fort and take over a settlement. I remember from the days I played POTC, that you have to bring down the fort and then fight your way through the guards. But alas, this doesn't seem to work for me in CoAS.

I tried two settlements, one I managed to bring down some cannons, but my fleet was too small to take it down so I tried a smaller one. That one, well, I was bombarding it till all my ammunition in both ships was depleted and couldn't damage it at all.

So I've been wondering, am I not supposed to capture settlements till I've done a quest or something? Was I doing it wrong? Is my cannoneer so useless or my aim that bad? Are there any requirements in terms of officers / crew / fleet and whatnot?

Please, shed some light on this issue of mine!

Regards,
Alkar

You can't capture towns till you have completed a questline which i think is the French questline or so it seems. Not sure, but you must complete a questline.

You can loot towns all day, you need good ships like MOW's about 3 should be enough, or buy a few Galleons and land at a beach and walk through the jungle to the town you wish to loot (you will need the perk land attack first though) the land attack is the easier way, not sure if you can capture towns this was aswell or if you must destroy the fort etc. If you do want to go via the harbour then you have to destroy so many of the forts guns and then kill every troop inside the fort and then kill all troops defending the town.

Hope that helps.

Is this true? I want to capture cities for myself eventually and need more info on the questline that needs to be completed. Can it be a Spanish, Dutch, or English questline? Can it be any quest or does it have to be from the governors?

Also wanted to know about controlling your own ports, frequency of enemy attacks, and if you can pay for peace through the diplomat like the manual states?

These are important questions as the main reason I am playing the game is to eventually control the Caribbean with my own ports.

Sorry to double post, but after reading some more threads it appears that you have to complete any national quest line given from a governor general in order to capture settlements for yourself. In order to do governor general missions you need a letter of marque from a governor of your nation.

Not sure if the governors quests are counted as part of the national quest line, you may be able to buy the letter of marque from a diplomat instead and bypass the governors missions?

Still wondering how often a player controlled port gets attacked and by what nations? I remember in AoP, taking a port for yourself would mean instant war with all nations. It would be cool in CoAS if you took a french port then only the french would try to get it back. I havent played enough yet to know the mechanics, or how much a peace treaty costs with a diplomat.

If nobody posts back here, and I get far enough into the game I will post what happens so people can better understand the mechanics.
