Caribbean Legend: Age of Pirates

A new installment has been announced for the first quarter of 2026. It's supposed to offer more free play (sandbox) and be less linear (story-driven). So, more in the vein of Age of Pirates 2: City of Abandoned Ships again.

Developer: ReCon Team

Publisher: BlackMark Studio, Valkyrie Initiative

I'm very curious what this actually is.
I understand it's a remake of CoAS but based on Caribbean Legend?
That may or may not include Caribbean Tales as well?
I'm SO confused on everything that's available and that's happening!

Hi Pieter,

i don´t think that this new installment of CoAS will include Caribbean Tales as well. As far as i understood it´s just another mod from CoAS with shares from Caribbean Legend or rather SDTEHO (because Caribbean Legend is just a rename of SDTEHO with some addons). They always use the basement of CoAS and change a little bit here and a little bit there. Renaming a game a lot of times doesn´t really make a brand new game out of it for my taste. I played them all and by the time it starts to get boring because it´s always more or less the same thing. But this is only my personal opinion.

I wish you a nice christmas and a lucky new year :thumbs1

It's an expanded, retail version of the ReCon mod for City of Abandoned Ships. They're just continuing their work on the newer Caribbean Legend branch of Storm. They are not trying to convince anyone this is a brand new game - the Steam page says it's based on City of Abandoned Ships at the very top. You have to remember most people who are playing CL now never played any of the old Sea Dogs games. Blackmark is trying to get new people into Sea Dogs, and updating the older installments to be less unfriendly makes a lot of sense, IMO, especially because many of the Steam and GOG reviews for every pre-TEHO installment imply that the games are unplayable without mods anyway. It is so much easier to point people to a game they can just buy without having to think too hard about it. This isn't exactly a thriving genre so you want to lower the barrier to entry as much as possible without compromising the games themselves.

And this is just me, but with the amount of work they've put in CL calling it a simple "rename" of SDTEHO is a little rude, I think!

I find it simply unfair when the same game, to which only technical and visual improvements have been made, is offered again under a different name at the full price. In my opinion, that's just not right, and I'm not alone in that opinion, as you can easily see from the Steam reviews. But that's just a side note. Everyone is free to decide for themselves what they think about such behavior.
