Character portrait

I was looking through the models for one I'd like for a new character, but the one I selected "bugmanpirat14.gm" lacks interface portraits. So I created the three (64, 128, 256) portraits for him, but I don't know what to name the files or how to tie them to load with "bugmanpirat14". I've tried searching but I can't find an answer. Help!

Alright folks, I created portraits for "bugmanpirat14" that didn't have any (model was set to face 322, but no such faces existed). I also created a 'background' image for the character selection screen if you choose to add him as selectable when starting a new game. In addition, I created all-new portraits for three other models: 33_Piratess10, 50_Becka and 50_evl2in. I may partake in creating new ones for other characters that I don't fancy; no offense meant to those of you who originally created these.

Click <a href="http://webpages.charter.net/emptycanteen/potc/portraits.jpg" target="_blank">here</a> for a sample of the 256 portraits that display when playing as that model. The 128 and 64 portraits are their heads over blue background as default PoTC had it. The selection screen 'backgrounds' are just resizes of the 256 portraits, not full bodies on a ship like the Build uses.

The ZIP has all four model portraits.
- face 171 = 50evl2in
- face 183 = 50_Becka
- face 224 = 50_Piratess10
- face 322 = bugmanpirat14

Feel free to incorporate in future Builds.

well, i must say that those are really nice. the one thing that i find a bit odd though is that the governor's daughter looks oddly big. it would also seem a bit strange to me that she would stand like that when her ship is engaging a fort, but that's not that very important.

I added another, 50Grey1, which is a grey-haired Barbossa ya can buy from tailors I do believe. Same download link as above with it included now. <a href="http://webpages.charter.net/emptycanteen/potc/50grey1.jpg" target="_blank">Here is photo.</a>

Also, the "50_evl2in" was wrongly named; it should have been "50evl2in" so I fixed that for the 'background' filename.

As to the governor's daughter, I suppose I wasn't going for the look of her actually on the deck of the ship. Even the portraits of the men would suggest they are hovering over the water, ha. I suppose you're right that it does look especially off with the gov's daughter... I'll look into a different backdrop.

By the way, I am simply taking shots of the models in GM Viewer, and using Photoshop to remove the grey background, add a slight glow around models, plopping over a background, and for the 256 portraits adding a slight 'canvas texture' effect. It does seem to me that the GM Viewer doesn't load models as pretty as the in-game versions, but taking an in-game screentshots are more time-consuming and I'm not skilled enough in Photoshop to isolate the model from the shots.

actually, the others look quite good. especially the top left and the bottom right. the thing with the bottom right one is that he isn't really attached to the background. the others are. (sort of) it's more like the background is decorative instead of more-or-less functional, which actually looks quite good.

the fifth one seems slightly odd. but that's just the difference in graphics. for the rest, the background and the character fit quite well together.

Always the critic! Well, next time I'm playing I'll take some screenshots to use as backdrops to make ol' Barbossa and the governor's daughter look not-so-odd.

Any models you personally would like to see new portraits for? I'm doing it as I purchase from tailors or hire officers who have portraits I don't fancy.

That looks quite nice. I wonder where the character portraits for these characters went though. I recall there WERE portraits for some of them, strangely enough. In any case: Thanks for your work. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

Oh, don't worry, of those I've created, only "bugmanpirat14" lacked portraits. The rest have existing portraits; I simply created new replacement ones I thought were a bit better. Unfortunately, some models have ugly textures in the first place, like "cnorrington", so I can only do so much in making decent portraits and I'm not skilled enough with Photoshop to create new model textures altogether (I wish I were so savy).

Anywoo, I recreated the 256 portraits for 50_Becka and 50Grey1 models per morgan terror's criticism and I think they look quite nice now. I'd done an additional five more models worth of portraits as well. I will hold off updating my ZIP and photo until I've created more.

Now that I check the portraits folder, you may be right, 322 is the highest face #, but there are only 280 files, so potentially 42 models without portraits, or some numbers were skipped in naming the face_## files. Yep, I randomly looked up a couple and sure enough some models are tied to missing face files. I suppose the big question is, are all models available to purchase from a tailor or used by officers? If not, then some don't need portraits at all, unless one wanted to set their starting character to use that model of course. Meh.

Oh, I suppose.

<a href="http://webpages.charter.net/emptycanteen/potc/portraits.jpg" target="_blank">Photo of portraits</a> and <a href="http://webpages.charter.net/emptycanteen/potc/portraits.zip" target="_blank">download for your game</a>.

yes, those look excellent! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> nothing to change on that!

The download ZIP has been updated with 33 model portraits now. I removed the 'background' portraits though as I only created them for the first handful of models and didn't bother for the rest, plus they didn't go with the Build's theme for character selection screen anyway.

No new screenshot, sorry, too time-consuming. The existing one shows my work, and you could always view them the files in ConverterTX if you really want to know whether you like my replacement portraits. Backup of original files is always a wise idea so you can revert back if you don't like mine. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Nice. I can't download it though. My internet connection aboard the MS Zuiderdam is both slow and expensive. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />
