Well I'm at my parents for Christmas and my old computer I owned in college has been resting here for a few years and is pretty much my only computing option until I go home (to a vastly superior system) after New Year's.
The specs:
AMD Athlon 1.4 ghz
512 mb ram
NVidia GeForce 3 64 mb
Windows 98*
Some issue with the hardware prevents XP from being installed, I tried repeatedly to get XP on this system a year ago.
Now, in the past I've played games like Morrowind on this computer with very good performance, and considering my brief experience with this game, I don't see why this computer shouldn't be able to handle Pirates!
Well, anyways when I got home for the holidays I reformatted this comp and did not bother installing the new drivers. I bought Pirates for myself today and installed it, after installing the included DirectX 9.0c I start the game and everything works perfectly except land/coastline. The sea looks fine but when you head towards land the coastal waters turn into an extremely bright monotone cyanish color and the land itself will sometimes peak through in a bright monotone yellow or green, but often the land is obscured and you can barely tell where coastal waters end and land begins.
Well, I decide it's time to update the old NVidia drivers so I download the newest available drivers and install them. Pirates! goes from being playable but graphically horrific (in one key area) to me getting the DirectX cannot initialize see readme error that was discussed in an earlier thread.
So my question is, is there anyway to fix the problem with the coastal coloration while perhaps just using the out of the box NVidia drivers? I don't feel like fiddling with a bunch of crap on this computer, I just want to be able to play the game to pass time until I head home (where I shouldn't have these problems, hopefully.)
Keep in mind my parents are in the technilogical stone age and have AOHell so downloading lots of things willy nilly takes too much time.
Anyways, I consider it somewhat amusing my problem became worse with the installation of the newest drivers.
