Condition of Enemy Ships during Battle

Is there any way to tell ho damaged an enemy ship is damaged during the actual battle? In the manual, it indicates things like...

If an enemy ship totally loses it's sails, it will most likely surrender the next time you pass.

...or something similar.

I don't see any way to see what condition the hull or sails are while I'm fighting. I have to believe I'm missing something here.

What is it?

Well, sails full of holes, smoking hulls and destroyed masts might be considered small, delicate hints at the enemy vessel's condition. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

If you haven't seen that so far maybe you didn't do enough damage? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

When I play I can actually see the effects of my cannon shot on the other ship. I can see holes appear in the sail, I will see items fly off the ship, I can even see people go flying into the air. The enemy ship will start to burn at times.. I guess what I am trying to say is, there are visual clues as to how much damage a ship is taking.

Also, when the enemy has had enough you will see them run up the white flag. Just watch their flag, the yellow, red, blue, or orange flag they fly on the ship. If they decide to surrender, it will change to white. Most times, this happens when you are fairly close to them...

Thank you.

I'm still getting used to the game in the easiest mode and can definately tell that I'm doing damage to them. It's funny to see the people get blown off into the water. I was just wondering if there was an actual number of % damaged like there is when you go get it repaired.

It's surprising how many times I can keep pummeling a ship and not see it sink so I obviously wasn't damaging it as much as I thought. Ii'm sure over time, I'll get a feel for it.

Thanks again for the info.

They'll raise the white flag even you are further away if they are damaged enough. And, yes, the visual cues to the condition of the enemy ship should be enough...

For Sails look at the holes, but also look at the kts indicator for the enemy ship, you'll notice it getting slower as you make new holes in the enemies Sails. E.g. Watch it drop from 9 to 0 kts as a rough gauge, i.e. a speed to damage ratio.

I also noticed that sometimes the ship might appear to be sinking as well, usually the bow is partly under water giving that half sunk look.

Also, any sailors or barrels that fly off their ship, you can sail over and pick up. Adds extra goods to the haul as well as gives you spare crewmen if needed. One for one though. Sail over a sailor, get one crewman. Sail over a barrel, get 100 gold, although I'm not too positive on the amount of gold you get. Will explore that later tonight.

See? I -still- haven't broken down and read the manual. What's wrong with me? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

You're used to the idea that MOST manuals aren't HELPFUL! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Well, normally that's true. But nice big manuals such as this one are bound to have something useful in them. No, the reason I haven't read the manual yet is because I'm too addicted to the game to pull myself away.

Yep, sucks you into it, doesn't it? And it calls you back... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

In the heat of battle, I find it distracting from my goal to worry about picking up anything floating around in the water. If I incidentally get some, great, but my main focus is on boarding that enemy ship...

...Gotta go, need to get back into the game! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Yeah, I don't go out of my way to get the extra stuff. I will, however, take targets of opportunity. If one is close I will veer to get it if it doesn't put me in harm's way. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Aye nates,usually don't bother wid float'n stuff unless it 'appens tew be kegs O' rum float'n aroun' <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
