The Caravel a class 5 ship that can help you make alot of money early on in the game, she has 30 cannons so you can fend off many foe's without too much of a problem, some what slower than you would like perhaps but still she can be fully upgraded for as little as 500,000 piasters.

The Fluyt, a class 4 ship which is normally seen as a trade ship due to its lack of cannons, only 18 cannons protect this ship in returne you have a decent sized cargo space. Normally this ship will do 12 to 13 knots before been upgraded so she's quite fast for a ship of her size.

Now here comes the problem, the Fluyt is a higher class ship than the Caravel yet the Caravel has more cannons (not too much of a problem there) however in most cases i have seen the Caravel can haul just as much cargo as a Fluyt just a little slower. My Caravel for example has been upgraded as did a Fluyt i had, the Fluyt was faster and could manouver better and could take much more damage, but couldn't carry any more than the Caravel. Now most people with a Fluyt are trying to aviod conflicts so 18 cannons isn't a problem and the amount of strength the ship has is important for slow trade ships like the Fluyt, however someone with a Caravel could also be trying to aviod conflicts and yet has a better chance of taking down there adverseries depending on how good they are at tactical battles. I for one had a very boring fight against a Battle Xebec which had 20 cannons, we was firing at each other from midnight till 12 pm the following day. I was trying to build my cannon skills up so i was manually aiming, firing first chainshots, some cannon balls/round shots to help increase the skills even more then i started firing grapeshots till i boarded and captured her. The reason it was boring was the Xebec didn't bother to try and come in close, the AI had the upper hand with the wind on there side while i would be sailing into the wind if i was to try and get closer to the Xebec, but the AI didn't seem to take that into account and just sat there firing its cannons at me just inside of its own range of its 12 calibure cannons. I had 24 calibure cannons so i had a slightly lorger radious. I use Cannons over Culverins at the start because of the loading times, i switch to Culverins when my crew is perfect and my own skills are at least 70 or above.

Anyway back to the point, shouldn't the Caravel be a higher clsee ship since she is in my opinion much better than most class 4 trading ships. I think the Fluyt should take they both need swapping around or the Caravel has been made to have a larger cargo hold than normal. Anyway i will leave it up to you guy's i could be wrong ad the Caravel might be right i don't know, just seems weird to me.

yeah sometimes i wonder how they decide how to classify certian things.but it's very easy
to reclassify the ships and change their cargo hold size speed and even calliber
just go toprogram ships ship init and find the ship ya want to modify then plug in the numbers ya want and save and they work for the most part.nto saying you would but ya could have a carvel that goes 20 knots and has 100000 hull hit points lol.certian things are very easy to minipulate in this game others not so easy.

You have a good point. Have you ever looked at some of the historical national rating scales? Depending on era there is a lot of divergence. For example, during the mid seveteenth century there were roughly four ratings in the Dutch and English navies for "Frigates" alone. Often that class of ship was categorized as a 5th or 6th rate later with the number of guns ranging from 28 to 52. Ships left over from earlier eras sometimes got their own class as in the case of the French system during the mid eighteenth century with the 70 gun ship being given 4th rate designation when superceded by the 74.

The rating system everyone seems to be the most familiar with: that of the British Navy at the end of the 18th century/beginning of 19th cent had 6 formal ratings: 6th: 20-28 guns, 5th: 32-44 guns, 4th: 44-56 guns, 3rd: 60-84 guns, 2nd: 90-98 guns, and 1st: 100-120 guns. However, there are informal sub ratings on all the rolls and listings consisting if you wanted to give them a number of 7th being colliers, sloops and brigs of 14-18 guns, 8th being cutters of 4-14 guns, 9th armed schooners, Bomb vessels, and gun-boats, and 10th "transports, storeships, tenders, yachts, hoys, and barges". :mm

I think the game looks at size/tonnage/hit-points more than anything else in the class system hence the low numbers of guns on some of the higher class cargo ships like the Fluyt and Pinnace, but I agree that a more logical approach would be beneficial, but difficult to implement.

Interesting technique on the cannons. Good observations. I'd never thought of that. Next game I start I will use cannons instead of upgrading so soon to culverins.

I have edited a few ships because i felt they was not doing what they should be.

Bermuda Sloop, can carry more cargo and has can use 16 calibure cannons.
Sloop same as above really.
Caravel has had some edits has as the Fluyt and Galleon and the Heavy Galleon which can all mount higher calibure cannons and carry more cargo than each other making it more understandable as to why they out class one another. You will find my file bellow, those who wish to look at it can do so or even use it. I have a few mods installed one been the new charaters and ships hence the reason i have so many ships listed in the ship.int file.
