What about the Spanish just promoting you because of past deeds. I haev noticed the game will remember what you do and if you attack some nations enemy they will reward you eventually, whenever you visit them. I was English and the English and Dutch were allied, with both being at war with Spain. I did not visit a Dutch town for many years, but when I finally did, I was promoted just because they did not like the spanish and keep tabs on my attacks..

Could it be something like this? The reason you were promoted? Were you promoted when you 1st met the Gov, or after the dance?

I've noticed that if I've done a lot to make a nation happy but haven't visited them in a while, I get back to back promotions. It's as if the govenor realizes you should have been Major by now and wants to make it up to you. I've gained the second promotion by doing nothing more than walking into the tavern and back to the Gov's house. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I noticed a similar thing when I was dancing "lost city" clues out of a spanish beauty. I had already received all the spanish promotions. I just danced, left town, came back to dance again, and before every dance, the governor would give me 50 acres of land, even though the only thing I had done since my last visit was dance with his daughter.

Since each dance earned me a map piece (and therefore a point), my theory is that nations reward you for each point you get. But I'm not sure if acquiring an item such as a shirt gets you a point, so maybe my theory doesn't hold...
