Defending: I need some advice.

How u guys defend a city ? I usually come with my fleet front of the island, before the end and i get all the ships in this formation:

I can defeat them, but many times, the last (1 or 2) enemy ships just escape...they leave and the siege is not over and the town is just lost. (Cant follow them - almost destroyed my ship)
1. How can i stop the enemies, and use at the same time my fort too ?
2. Is it possible to cancel a siege with different strategy ?
3. Any other ideas ?

Depend on enemy ships class's , try either ordering your ships to hit same target while u hitting other ship or order each 2 ships to hit 1 target so u have your fleet hitting 2 enemy ships and u working on 3rd enemy ship . Make use of the fort by getting enemy ships within the fort range , the fort fire power is great and it will turn the tide into your side .

Try placing your ships just below the fort with their broadesides facing enemy , this way the enemy will start taking fire from fort even before entering into your ships range . Once the fort start firing at enemy go with your own ship ahead and skirmish the incoming fleet just to give the fort more time to fire more .

Keep an eye on enemy ship that is taking more damage cuz it might try to flee from the battle so it might be good for u to use chain shots earlier just to prevent them from escaping later .

After u see the fort has done reasonable damage to enemy ships , order your stationed ships to engage the enemy and for that to work best I order them to BOARD , this way the will load with grape shots and will sail to get within range which will make them get better accuracy then I switch order to ATTACK and they will switch ammo to canonballs and exploding shots at close range and they will do more damage .

Hey, good strategy too, but i always find the enemy ships not very close to the shore, i intercept them only when in Sea Mode, and they are never close. Did i have to intercept them at the last day to be sure they will be closer ? I draw u an example for Tortuga:

The only way to attack them is to turn "Sea Mode" at the red dot. If i wait for the last 1-2 days of the time i have, am i gonna be able to stop them closer to the shore or not ? And is it possible to find an "escaped" ship, also once i got a chance to pay to the attackers, so i can keep my town, what do to pay again ?

Thats sounds odd cuz in my case I always find them when am WITHIN the island coast ! Are you sure you attacking the right enemy ships ? You should get your journal update when you start the encounter with the enemy siege ships .
 
I found easier way <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> Just i payed 4.5mil-4.7mil for each of my towns and they are no more targets for France/Holland...Sadly this was not mention at the russian manual <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> Or i couldn't read for it nowhere.
