in duel how do tou do that backflip thing, or swinging on the rope ?

I find I only get the backflip or the rope trick about 1 times in 10. I'm not sure if it is random, or if it is a matter of really good timing (like the pirouettes in dancing).

There are similar tricks with the "1" attack key, I think--kicking the bucket, picking up the stick, etc.

It is a matter of very good timing. It is easier to accomplish with the slower enemies, since you get a better opportunity to hit the key at the correct time.

Just on those kicking the bucket and grabbing the gaff moves, here's how you can get them every time guarenteed: <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

When you see "stuff" on the deck if your feet are directly over it then don't attack. When the opponent attacks, do the block for that particular move then it's opposing attack move to cause the combo. This will make you pick up the item and use it. They make the opponent stumble back THREE (yes that's 3) steps instead of 1 or 2. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> If you're lucky on the "stuff" placement, you can knock the opponent off the ship (or into the fire) in only 2 moves. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

How to get a combo:
I only ever use combos now, never attacking first. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

- Opponent high attack: when the opponenet high attacks you, duck (2) and as you come back up hold the `high-attack` key (7).
- Opponent low attack: when the opponent low attacks you, jump ( 8 ) and as you land on the deck hold the `low-attack` key (1).
- Opponent middle attacks: parry the stroke (5) and as your arm is forced upwards by the opponent's stroke hold the `high-attack` key (7).

NOTE: It's very hard to get the middle attack combo perfect when fighting a fast opponent (bar, captain of the guard, suiter) so I don't bother with them. After parrying I just abuse them (6).

The third combo´s my personal favourite. Anything else, I most use the thrust after evading an attack. It´s the fastest attack, and while the enemy is spinning, he´s got no chance to parry.
A good advice is getting the balanced swords as soon as they´re offered. If you decline them, you might not be able to get them later, and if you´re getting old and slow, they really make a difference.
