Enemy health?

I'm lvl 7 now, build 13, with a corvette (got a lot of money in those "captains chests") and... I'm fighting pirates on class 5/6 ships with over 300 hp?! Is there a setting I have set, or is it something else?

Methinks it's random. One ship will have a very strong crew and the next one will have a weak crew. Hmm. Maybe it is related to morale.
