I think there should be ships that you can only buy from each nation.

Jest capture them than change yer flagship in de interface screen <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

that's kind of silly that you can't buy ships.
What if you want to play the game as a trader? you have to get in fights to get more ships? no no. there must be a way to buy ships. there HAS to be.

If you want to play as a trader, you shouldn't buy a game called Pirates!

It's called that for a reason. If you want to play as a trader, Port Royale is the way to go. Pirates! was never a `trading-sim`.

ok, well, i was exaggerating. Obviously you can't get anywhere in the game without doign some killing once in a while.
You do make a good point.
Still, there should be a way to BUY ships no?

If you have no warships in your fleet, you can buy smaller warships at the shipwright. This is the only way to buy ships in the game.

It is really strange that you cant buy ships in the game.

Why wouldnt a english merchantman seel ships to me (an english duke?) who are highly respected in the english society.

It just doesnt make any scence to me.

^^ Exactly. I haven't played the game much i will admit, but this one minor detail has been nagging me. I don't want to have to steal/capture every single ship in my fleet.

Aye,I'd be surprised ye can't buy ships,although like de upgrades ye can buy <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Still, we all know this game is a remake with only a few additions (and sume substractions unfortunately). I'm guessing we'll se an expansion pack or a sequel of some sorts, and we won't have to wait another 15 years or so.

The european version has just gone gold, so I can´t verify my statement above... BUT according to the insider information article on Cutlass Isle it should work:

<i>Teach
Q: I read you cannot buy ships, true or not?

A: This is partly true, although not entirely. Sid created the game so that if you only have merchant ships (no war ships) the shipwright will offer to sale you smaller warships, such as the Sloop.

Civ's note: Now I’m starting to like this. You obviously cannot buy a Frigate when you are powerful already. With your reputation why would someone sell a pirate a larger warship? Selling you a small warship when the shipwright sees you do not already have any warships is quite a smart touch, in my opinion.</i>

The answers in the article, which was released November 18, are given by Firaxis' Barry Caudill and Civrules, moderator at CI and beta tester. I don´t suppose that was changed prior to release.

Aye ,Thats waht was needed tew know,thanks Mate <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I was reading the manual again yesterday and it said something about retiring your pirate in case you want to try other strategies, like being a merchant, pirate hunter etc. But really in my opinion the game only lends itself to being a pirate else as a merchant, you would be able to buy the really large mercdhant ships, as it is now it seems that you have to go out and be a pirate, raiding and plundering to get that really large merchant ship so that you can go on to being a merchant trader.

I guess thats allright an all in my book, because quite honestly I dont see any possibility of being a merchant trader, making enough gold to keep your crew happy since the crew will still want large amounts of gold be be brought in, and if your doing it legitimately as a merchant I just dont see that happening.

actually, after playing this game quite a bit more, i've realised that purchasing ships would be a bad idea anyways. I think it would be far too easy to just find a bunch of burried treasure, take out a bunch of merchant ships, and then just go buy the most powerful warship in the game.

It's probably a play balancing reason. You have to earn your more powerful ships.

I tried a career as a merchant and it's not too bad. You can use a smaller crew since you are not fighting. Smaller crews stay happier easier because each man's cut is larger. Split 40,000 between 50 guys instead of 300 guys... the math works out better. You can suppliment some of that by treasure hunting. It's kind of cool to see how far you can go without firing a shot.

^^ wouldn't that mean you'd be stuck with a sloop for the whole game? I would think what you're saying would be cool but wouldn't you need a couple trade galleons to make it worth your while? And in order to get those, you'd have to fire a few shots here and there =)
