Escape from Oxbay Quest

Okay, I have a few comments regarding the Tobias/Escape from Oxbay Quest. I honestly don't think this quest should be as hard as it currently is. The French are supposed to be taken completely by surprise because they expect that you are going to be escaping via the jungle, therefore why is it so darned hard to escape? In order to escape you need several factors to be true:

1. You need the wind to be blowing out, if it is blowing in towards shore you are totally screwed. Between the fort, the battleship and the two frigates you will be driftwood in seconds flat, even dumping all cargo except a little food is absolutely pointless in this instance. It would make sense that they (Rabel, Tobias and crew) would not attempt to escape until the wind is favorable.

2. The French are supposed to be taken by surprise.....it would be nice if there was some sort of delay where the fort and ships don't immediately attack.....(maybe a 35-45 second delay where the ships and fort do nothing) afterall Yverneau is supposed to be one of thier own and there should be alot of confusion about firing at a French ship. It also seems way to easy for the French to dismast the Rivoli (Yverneau's Ship), when this happens it is a restart as well because you are dead in the water. As for the French troops that swarm at you....I have no problem with that...although it would be nice if as soon as Rabel disappears if the ship icon appeared letting you go to sea...as it currently stands it doesn't do so until several seconds after he disappears. Kinda hard making an escape when you are blocking attacks from 3 or more french soldiers....also it wouldn't make sense that you would stick around to slaughter and loot them....you are supposed to be escaping LOL

Anyone else's thoughts on this quest?

Board Baby Board!!

I see it as follows: you <i>were</i> supposed to take French by surprise. However, during your fight with French soldiers in harbour one could assume that some frog ran to inform fort that commander of corvette 'Rivoli' and his crew betrayed and now are British. Then, fort issued flag signals to French squadron that they must sink that ship. Yverneau went earlier because he had to prepare his ship and crew to fight and escape. Preparations was made on both sides when you were in a boat paddling to Yverneau ship. That's why you're hit simultaneusly from fort and ships when you arrive on deck!

When I have opposite wind I turn toward 'Belette' until I have wind from the backbort. As she usually turns her bow toward me, after first salvo she has usually lower firepower from two bow guns. If not many of your crew got killed after initial cannonade you could theoretically board and capture all three of French ships guarding Oxbay and, then sack Oxbay. However, if you want to escape, the wind should change to more favourable before you approach 'Belette'. If don't, you'll be forced to sail closely to battleship bort, so make it fast - even if you succeed and your corvette survive this, you won't be able to afford next salvo, so try to steer so enemy ships can't use their broadsides.

If you could 'fool' French with a false flag that would be way too easy - just leave the port and enter the map?

look carefully if the grass is moving a lot. that means there is a lot of wind. if there isn't, simply load from a save from before you exited the tavern for the last time and try again. setting the game to arcade mode makes it a lot easier as well.

Boarding is the key! I left Oxbay with the battleship in MY fleet. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bounce.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":b:" border="0" alt="bounce.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Heh!! Yer a better man than I, Elizabetta611! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> I usually wait to get some experience before I tackle the French ships at Oxbay!

i just board what i want to board, no matter what ship i have. the odd thing is, that i always succeed. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> even by ramming a tartane into a battleship. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" /> i'm just plain lucky i guess. but i never board the ships off oxbay, although i could take them on.

Morgan, at what level are you playing?

For me the key here has always been to sail directly toward the French ships and to avoid the broadsides.

Love the image in your signature, Morgan. Where did you get it?

lowest difficulty level. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> i might try a higher one some day.

found it on google under Henry Morgan between the images.

oh. well it's pretty useless then, eh? anyway, you can't even start with a tartane, so i usually have a gunboat that serves me just fine. still, journeyman isn't the lowest.

I enjoy taking apart the french fleet by bording them ,,,lol

Actually this is one of the quest look forward to cause it gives me at least a BB to put in storage .

Well Darkphoenix, I agree with you on several points :
- about the wind, that'd be good indeed if we could made so that it's blowing in the right direction.
- I agree about a small delay before the French ships start to attack - time to realise what is going on. But I prefer that the fort fires from the begining : after your little mess in town, that would be very logical.

Yes, I too lost one mast at the first shot, but managed to escape anyway... Guess that was my lucky day.

In my opinion, if we want the story to be a bit realistic, you shouldn't be able to board a single ship. Maybe the French captain accepted to betray his country, but it's hard to imagine the whole crew and all the officers would do the same - especially to surrender to the bloody hated brits!!! Personaly, I think you should sail away with minimum crew, and crew moral very low. And a atemps to board one of the others ship would mean mutiny.

I've actually being thinking a lot on the Oxbay quest. I think a lot of improvements should be done.
The first time you enter the city, you are supposed to be a lonely spy. So coming with 10 crewmen and 3 tought wouldn't made sens. When you enter the Oxbay outdoors, if you have crewmen with you the dialog should be automaticly launched, with only one option enabled : 'return to the ship men, I won't need you there'. (Maybe we could made so that you are able to meet them again when you re-enter the jungle?)

Now about the second task and the escape itself... this time you could enter with some crewmen, and those would be added to the Rivoli crew number - which would be minimal crew. When you'll run to the ship, you wouldn't have to kill all the soldiers (in stock PotC you didn't need to) and if you do, another bunch would come - with muskets !
I would add another scene before finding yourself at sea, where Ravel Yverneau rush on the deck shouting orders to make sail immediaty to the astonish french crewmen. The cinematic of the 'hit' in Redmond tavern could be used to see him punching an officer that was trying to reason with him. At this moment, I would recommend to switch of main character : Ravel Yverneau re-skilled would become the Pchar, with your former Pchar as an officer - this is perfectly doable, I had made some experiments that prove it.
As Redmond is really far from Oxbay, it doesn't make a lot of sens to meet your fleet at Redmond and not at Greenford. But this could hardly be changed as it's a trick for the case you have already four ships in your escadron.

<i>lowest</i> difficulty level?!? Come on! That's not even funny! This level is for beginers! Try to play at adventurer level for a change.

i see no reason at all to change the escape from oxbay. if you think you need to act alone, then simply don't take the entire crew with you. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> an important reason not to change this is because it's one of the few things that actually works! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

lowest difficulty level is fun because it's not difficult. the higher ones are just for when you want to give yourself a harder time.

If you sink the ships before doing the task to go to rabel, they respawn... a bit odd, but ok.

i've a other problem with this task,
if I enter the port, It autowalks to a spot near the soldier but it doesn't talk.
i've been waiting for hours till the soldiers came, but they didn't and i was unable to move.

somebody knows how to fix it?

i guess you killed the soldier once. then he doesn't talk to you later in the main quest. the respawning ships can be turned off in the buildsettings.
