Flashing during Cinematics with ATI 9800Pro - Solution

I've always been a fan of this game from Pirates (Apple) to Cutthroats and now back to Pirates!. Just picked this gem up yesterday and was a bit annoyed when the first cut scenes had this horrible white flashing occuring. My system is completely up to date and is using the CAT 4.11s. After tweaking one setting after another I found the culprit.

Antialiasing!

I am using 2X antialiasing on all my apps (I've turned off anisotropic) and while that is on I get the problem. If I set it to program default . . . all is fine. This kind of bites because now I have to remember to switch this on and off for this one program. But at least it runs. And it sure is purty <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Between this and Pacific Fighters my weekends will be busy <grin>.

I share your pain Kam, I have the same issue.

However...

If you have Trilinear filtering selecting `in-game` then your video card applet control panel should be set to Application Preference (AF is Trilinear/Bilinear filtering, it's just a new name). If it's set on the card, then that will overide the `in-game` Trilinear option.

As for the solution regarding FSAA, well with all due respect, that is not a solution. What you are effectively doing by setting it to program default (application preference) is disabling FSAA, thus you enter a 3d world of jaggie and shimmering graphics with poor picture quality.

I'm afraid that the only solution is going to have to come from the developers themselves, in the form of a patch. Somebody has said on this forum that there is official word that this is going to be fixed (however there was no supporting reference to back this claim up).

We can but wait.

Kamikaze, just turn on AA again after you've seen the intro movies. The rest of the cutscenes are not movie files, so you will not get flickering there with AA turned on. You might have to quit the game to `re-enable` AA though. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

And agreed, it's no solution. But a workaround.

Yes . . we are all in agreement here then.

On a wierd note. I tried the 4.12BETAs and they seemed to have solved the problem. That is I could turn on the AA and run the game. I was looking forward to the official release. NO JOY <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Same problem with the official drivers. Before you say "just use the BETAS" I have an All In Wonder and the Beta's dont have the Video Capture. So dont even bother <grin>.

As Hengist stated . . we'll have to wait for a patch.
