Railroad Tycoon, Pirates, Red Storm Rising, the Civ series, Gettysburg, etc, the reason these games have been so popular and so long lasting is not because of one long play through session, but because you can play again and again with different circumstances and different outcomes every time. No two sessions were ever the same.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Okay, just for giggles last night, I sat down to play a round of Pirates! Gold on my old 486 (had to reinstall DOS too... don't ask). I started out on the Journeyman level. After about 7 hours of `non-stop` playing (I was up real late but was off work today), I had taken old Cap'n Toast to the end of his career. I made some mistakes, and had some success. I had about 4 decent cruises and a couple other ones that went pretty badly. Ended up retiring as a Captain of the guard. Mid to low end ranking in my opinion.
I can say that when you are island hopping around St Kitts or Nevis and the wind is right you can bounce from island to island in seconds. But it's a LONG BORING voyage from Panama back up the coast to Port Royale. If it were any slower, it would have been `un-fun`.
To second what was said above, there is one thing that Sid's games have always done right. And that is replay value. If you are not a game replayer, perhaps this game will make you into one. If you have tried CIV III as just about every nationality, difficulty level, and land mass, then you already know what I mean.
When I retired last night, I thought, "Maybe I should start out with a dutch cargo fluyt and run goods back and forth until England declares war on the Dutch in about 1667 (or whatever year it was), then I can sack Nevis when she's fat!" It's this kind of stuff that brings me back to the game. As I was sailing around, I skimmed the FAQ for the new game and imagined how the new features would impact the game I was playing... Needless to say, this will be the game that I wanted Pirates! Gold to be 12 years ago.
I have played every Sid Meier title since Solo Flight on my Atari 800XL in 1984ish. I liked some better than others, but they were always pretty well done. Ad far as the pace of the game goes, I trust Sid to do it right again. The fact that he dumped the old land combat system and revamped it at the last minute (all in the name of fun), makes me confident that he'll get the game right and that he is committed to getting it right, even if it means last minute changes. I'd rather have a good prouct a month late than a buggy, `un-fun` one on time!
In Sid I trust! This game will be great! Sail HO!!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

I think most of us would agree to your last few comments. That we rather have a game a month (or more!) late than have a screwed up game on time. That would be a disaster.
I also agree that the game will be great as other games I've played such as CivIII.
I am so lucky to have gotten CivIII... I was so unfamiliar with any strategy games at the time and had almost gotten another strategy game instead of Civ. When I got it, it was a blast. One thing I am sure of that the most fun you have playing a game is when you first start to get to know the game -- when you are not familiar with anything you do. That is fun. It is fun because you learn and get surprised! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />
Even when I got to know how to play Civ, I learned new things about the game each day, weather it was PTW or C3C!
I think this is so unique about Sid's games. You keep having fun - not just fun from playing the game itself - but fun learning new things as you go years from when you have bought the game.
It is amazing to me how Firaxis is able to create a game so when you have passed the first learning stage, you still continue learning. This kind of drags along throughout your playing experience.
I also hope, as others probably do too, Pirates! is the same. I know I will have the most fun the first couple of weeks or months. But afterwards, what counts, is you learning the details about the game. That may be evolving new strategies or playing different styles.
That is fun.
