Getting SM Pirates! for Christmas

Buccaneer

Landlubber
Hey yall. I'm new here and was wanting to ask a question or two. I am getting SM Pirates! for Christmas, and was wondering what the general opinion of it is. I have been doing some hard research on this, and was wanting to get some info from the people who have gotten alot of game time in on it. I really like and am very interested in Pirates and the history of the Golden Age of Piracy. Any replies on this would be greatly appreciated!!

Have an ale! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/beer2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":beer" border="0" alt="beer2.gif" />

IMO: This game is a BLAST! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/guns.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2guns" border="0" alt="guns.gif" /> It's a lot of fun. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

It's not necessarily a "historical" game, but it's good plain plunderin' fun.

Ya get adventure, romance, mystery, and action, along with digging up treasure, hunting famous pirates, finding lost cities, and even finding your lost family.

If yer good at it, ya get promoted and get to wear a fancy uniform. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Governor's daughters all across the Caribbean are yours to woo and possibly marry (only one of those!). You can even duel against rivals! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" />

There's a large selection of ships <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" /> to choose from when plundering - find one that best suits your style and you can improve it and sail about harassing the "Greedy Dutch", the "Evil Spanish", the "Slimy French", and the ummm, not sure what the other countries call the English, but I'm sure it's nasty! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Heya, (I am from Valdosta), Let me first say, I enjoy this game a good deal, not as much as the original, but then again, that was the ORIGINAL.

I read that you are intersted in Pirates and the Golden age of Piracy? Please do not mistake this game for a history lesson. At best it is an arcade game with tads of role playing involved. Now, don't get me wrong, it's fun as the dickens, but the key word is fun. Many people that complain here had such different expectations of what the game should have been. I guess 15 years of fond memories tends to do that. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Also, in my opinion, it has been geared somewhat toward "mass appeal" audiences. Meaning, there is no blood and you never see anyone die.

I guess my point is, please, get this game, and enjoy it for what it is, instead of what you thought it would be. It IS indeed an almost exact replica of the original that came out in 1987, when it comes to gameplay. Right down the the EXACT same descriptions of the time periods and such.
It does have several added abilities as well as some deleted stuff.

Bottom line, I installed the game and started playing right away without having to look at the manual, still remembering the controls and what to do after 15 years. I then got up for a glass of water and realized 4 hours had slipped away, poof... just like when I started playing the original. As long as you do not think this is a Pirate RPG, and can understand certain historical facts were completely thrown out in favor of gameplay, you should really enjoy this game.

IMHO.

Joe
