A couple months ago I played through the MQ on build 13 and it were great fun.

But now I's wondering...is it possible to start a new game and become an English privateer WITHOUT playing the main quest? Because I sure don't feel like doing that whole "Sneaking into Oxbay" jazz again.

Many thanks in advance, mateys.

Just sink ships that are enemies of England and then apply for a Letter of Marque at one of the English governors.

I would swap that around. First get the Letter of Marque, then start sinking ships from England's enemies. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
You can simply ignore the main quest. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

it's difficult though. you really have to avoid oxbay, and that's impossible because of certain quests, like the animists quest, and the Claire Larrouse quest.

You don't need to avoid Oxbay. If you don't, it'll be captured by the French and then you can ignore the main quest anyway. Oxbay will just be French. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

well, you then get the mission from silehard anyway. as i said, you can't avoid it, at least not completely.

Not if you don't actually go TO Silehard. And even if you DO get the mission, you don't have to actually DO it until YOU want to.

Well, that's kinda the essence of my question. Oxbay gets captured, and then Silehard gives me that mission. Then he says if I don't do his mission, he'll have the English regard me as a pirate. Does that ever happen? And who's another governor I can get the letters of marque from? Antigua?

then the only options you have as governors are grand cayman and antigua. redmond is the best accessable one.

I tried this, the only real issue I found is that I couldn't finish any trade mission for oxbay, I got the dialouge from the store saying he would call the guards if I didn't leave. Apart from that its basically free play.

Edit: wrong quote, <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> It's not my day for the forums today I think I'm going to go detroy the english fleet to vent some frustration hehe

that's a bug i've heard several times already. i think you might have just found the cause of it. does this happen with the shipyard too?

Yep shipyard as well, as far as I can remember the tavern (At least it used to) won't hire out any crew either saying that the french took them all.

Edit: I even tried paying the pirate to get my rep sorted with the french but this didn't work either, I have a new T.V. system to set up but once I've done that I'll run some tests to see if theres anyway around it but as far as I know the stores in Oxbay don't work until after you've been to jail and oxbay is liberated

That's not a bug. That's intentional. It's been like that ever since the original game.

but you said you wouldn't be declared pirate if you didn't follow the mission. at least that you where not aware of it. and now you say you are. it seems like being declared a pirate by england to me if they become hostile to you.

I remember this being the case in Stock.

If you choose the option to leave before the french fleet arrives then as long as you don't accept a trade mission for oxbay then theres no issues with it for all intents and purposes Oxbay is a french town, allowing a player to play as they see fit, it basically means that Oxbay can't be used for repairs or anything but when you consider that you can sail to greenford and use that for repairs if need be then its all good <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

You are not being declared pirate. But Oxbay is captured by the French, so the Shipyard, Store and Tavern will do no business with you.

I think he's not talking about trading with Redmond or any other English town.

He is talking about Oxbay, which is still under French control.
