First of all, I just want to say what a great looking site this is. I was really impressed when I logged in and signed up.

While I haven't played every pirate game that's ever come out, I've taken a little interest in it recently and it's been a lot of fun. I played PoTC almost to the end. Got to the point where I had to fight the Black Pearl, but my ship was pretty beat up when I started and I didn't have enough firepower or skill to take it out. And I was too lazy to restore before the temple and build my fleet up again. The game was very enjoyable and the graphics are just stunning.

I ended up selling all my assets except for a Sloop and retired in the quiet coves of Falaise de Fleur.

Being a big fan of Sid Meier, a couple of months ago, I caught wind of the upcoming Pirates! release and while waiting, picked up a copy of Port Royale 2 which I hoped to satisfy me until the Pirates! was to be released. It's a fun game, but unfortunately I didn't have enough time to get very deep into it before Pirates! came out in November. Unfortunately, Pirates! had the same release date as World of Warcraft and that game has consumed a ridiculous amount of my free time. I want to get into Pirates! as well, but I have a couple of issues which are keeping me from sailing the high seas.

When I've had time, I've spent reading the manual although I'm probably just over halfway through it at this point. I didn't play the original pirates so I really had no idea what to expect. Open ended games are cool, but I'm just not sure even how to begin in this one. I can't remember a strategy type game I've ever purchased that didn't have some kind of tutorial. This not only helps you learn the interface, but also kind of gave me direction as to how to get started. In this game I have no idea. I realize the game is open ended, but I still feel like there's things I should be doing either from an exploration sense or from a military sense and I'm just totally lost.

The second thing that's keeping me from getting it going is my computer(s). I have a gaming laptop that I loaded the game on. Since a lot of the game mechanics use the numeric keypad, this presents a problem. My desktop PC would run the game fine, but I have the LE and that DVD (or any DVD) doesn't want to load. I can't even Explore it. CDs in the drive work fine. I tried copying the files to 2 CDs and installed from there. Everything worked fine, but as expected, whenever the desktop looks for the real CD, it can't find it. And since the computer won't recognize the DVD, I basically can't play it on my desktop. Anyone know why a DVD player would recognoize a CD, but not a DVD? I'm 100% positive it's a DVD player. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Anyway, a lack of game interface is also keeping my trying it. It's hard to fight when all you have are arrow keys although it's easily winnable at the easiest level.

That was kind of long, but I wanted to introduce myself as well as bring up these issues. This really is a great looking site and I look forward to coming back here to bother you veterans with my questions and hopefully help people with the limited skills I have.

Hello <b>Lyfisin</b>.

I just wanted to say hi.
Unfortunately I can't help you with your concerns. I am probably even newer into this game than you are.

You can read all about it in the "So close - need final push" thread. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />
I hope that you, as well as myself, will have a good time with SM's Pirates!

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> <b>Lyfisin, </b>and welcome aboard! Have an ale! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/beer2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":beer" border="0" alt="beer2.gif" />

Happy to see you in these fair waters; we have fun here, hope you will enjoy your stay! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I'm not sure why your DVD player is not recognizing the DVD. That's odd... Have you checked out the manufacturer's website to see if there's some kind of software you may be missing that would help you with this dilemma?

I would think you *should* be able to keymap your laptop keyboard for the number pad controls, if you don't already have a hotkey that will do that for you. Another option might be a USB port number pad...

And to add to your insanity - if you enjoyed PotC, you should try it with the mods we have here. It makes it an entirely different game - more to do, more to see, new quests, &tc... Check out this thread: <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net/`ftopic3295-0`.php" target="_blank">http://forum.piratesahoy.net/`ftopic3295-0`.php</a> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Hope this helps! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> Again, welcome aboard! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> to you too. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

And I'm 99% positive it's a broken DVD player. Sorry but that's the most likely explanation. Not much in the way of missing software or outdated drivers when it comes to CD/DVD drives.

Then again, a new DVD drive ain't exactly expensive. Or, if yours isn't too old, you still might be able to get a refund or something.

I didn't think it was a driver/software issue. Other than changing out the graphics card and adding more ram and XP fixes, that PC is in it's original state. I just reformatted it last weekend and restored with the original manufacturer's disks and it still doesn't work.

I'll look into a new DVD player.

Thanks for the quick replies. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

DVD players and CD players only have a certain amount of burns in them before the pack in <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Its always possible yours is on the way out <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_twisted.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_twisted.gif" />

XP fixes, I've heard SP2 cause more than its fair share of gaming problems <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

And welcome to this here forum, the people be pleasant, the jokes be funny, and the admins be ruthless and quick to anger <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

My DVD player is probably close to 3 years old, but has seen very little action. I almost always use the CD player for loading programs and only used the `DVD-R`/`CD-RW` drive on the rare chance I needed to burn a disk.

Of course "inactivity" of devices can sometimes be a problem too.

I'll get a new one. If it turns out to not be the problem, I'll use it somewhere someday.

Right now I just wanna play!

FWIW: can't say so. And if you're connected to the Internet running an unpatched, out of date Windows OS isn't exactly nice for the rest of the netizens as soon as one of them nasty trojans or other turn your machine into a virus factory. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" />

Y'arr people don't be misunderstanding me, if your rigs online most of the time, I didn't say stay out of date <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

But there was a list somewhere that listed close to 50 older games that had problems the moment SP2 was released. Including a mate who lost a hd in the process <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_twisted.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_twisted.gif" />

I do believe most of those problems have been sorted and as said if your online do be keeping your computer up to date...

//phew <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Didn't want to imply that you, Duckbeard, would act that irresponsible. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Humm, such a list could come in handy. Any idea where to look for it?

Welcome aboard Lyfisin, have a mug o' grogg <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I have to agree with nem your problem sounds like a faulty DVD drive.

Dug around last night and actually found my sales receipt. I almost never buy extended warranties, but since I moved to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, the lightning storms made me change my mind.

I still have 4 months left on my warranty so it looks like I'm covered on the DVD drive. They still won though. It's the first time I'll use it and the warranty was $150.00 and a new drive is as low as $20.00. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

Are you saying the warranty cost you $150, or that it covers $150? If it's the first one, then let me know where you got it from so I can avoid the place like the plague.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dp_nogd.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ng" border="0" alt="dp_nogd.gif" />

I'm not sure I said that right. It was an extended warranty and since I live in a lightning infested world, to me it was worth it. I've already lost a hub, cable modem, big screen TV and other goodies around the house just because of these storms.

So to be clear, it wasn't the original warranty. It was a 3 year one.

Anyway, I got it back last night. As expected, the DVD player wasn't working right and has been replaced.

Now I can try stuff like dancing, but the girls keep complaining about their feet getting stepped on. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />
