Hey Ya'll ....couple of questions regarding Build 13

Darkphoenix

Landlubber
Hey everyone,

I just signed up for this board and I've been playing the stock Pirates of the Caribbean for about a year now. I never even realized that there was a community build for the game until last week. I gotta say I am most impressed with the amount of work and detailing that went into the mod, it is totally amazing. I have a few questions however......

1. I just went ahead and installed Build 13...should I have installed previous versions first or will just installing 13 work fine as is?

2. Officers that you can hire at the start of the game seem waaaaay too good......I am happy that the officers are this good for later in the game assuming one of yours dies....that was something that always bugged me about the original game was that if one of your officers bought the farm after a few ranks and then you tried hiring a new one they really were....hmm..how should I put it.....less than optimal LOL.....anyways, I was wondering if there was a way to tone down the officers for the beginning of the game and make it where only officers from around your rank would be willing to join up with you?

3. Is there a way to tone down the items that you find early in the game? I, have noticed that the frequency at which some of the best swords and guns in the game can be found seems to be...waaay to often....for example...my guy hung around Oxbay until he was like rank 5 and he found 2 Solingen Rapiers and 2 Bosun's Choice's in this time......also....certain items should probably remain unique, like the Saber of Nicholas Sharp.....is there any way to change these settings? So, that powerful items are far more rare, and items that should be unique stay that way?

Anyways, I am having a blast with this new version of the game and like the fact that more items and more ships were added to the game. And the fact that you can now get a look at officers before you hire them is something I have dreamed about...I used to hate the fact that in the stock game you would hire an officer only to find out after you hired them and paid them that they were a total dud. Random meandering townspeople in town and in the taverns is a nice touch too, it really adds to the realism aspect of the game. Other little additions that are nice are being a bodyguard for a townsperson, random robbing people, and them robbing you (this seems to happen too often) and the fact that the towns are no longer completely safe anymore either. It is also nice that when you bite the bullet, you no longer necissarily buy the farm, and there is a chance you will be saved. One thing I found was that, you do NOT want to hang around if a riot breaks out on the town streets. You will be overrun with troops and you will die LOL. Finally, I would just like to send out a thank you to the people that have contributed to this game and this mod and totally appreciate any responses my post gets <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Might aswell save the forum a new topic and post my problem here, if ye dont mind darkphoenix... I downloaded the full build 13 from pieter's site, and now when i run it it tells me " A temprorary file needed for initialization could not be created or could not be written to. Make sure the directory path exists, and disk space is available"... I checked my disk space, 30gb of free space on this drive, and the path exists (as far as I am aware...)... I played this game when it came out and since one of the first mod builds... but alas, in my move to Utah (from florida) my game discs and the files got corrupted and it took me atleast a year to find another copy... does anyone know how to fix it short of redownloading the build? (All the download came with was a .exe for the build that was 368 (give or take a few)mb in size.)

Ediot (yup, ediot, not edit, cuz im an idiot): I had a corrupt file... i shoulda known better, but meh

It should work just fine without having to install anything before it. You can get Update 2 from <a href="http://pieter.piratesahoy.org" target="_blank">my site</a>, which should fix some issues in the original Build 13. However, there's one bug in there that wasn't in Build 13. I already have the fix, so I'll make a new update available soon.

I think the rank of the officers depends on your luck skill. If you try to hire officers at the start of the game, they aren't supposed to be very good. Unless you have a high luck skill already.

You should get Build 13 Update 2. It is working much better in there. Very good items can't be encountered early in the game anymore with that update.
I agree that the Saber of Nicholas Sharp should be made unique again. I'll do that for the next modpack update. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

the quality of officers is decided by your leadership skill. in case you where wondering why those corpses remain lying around, stand next to one and press 'T' to loot them.

I understand that Leadership, and or luck should play a role in how good the officers you hire are, and I agree, these skills should help you find officers that are great in relevance to your current rank. What I am saying though is that it should not be possible though, for a rank 5 or 6 Captain to hire a rank 15-18 officer.

This is great news! It was one of the few minor, and when I say minor, I mean VERY minor things that bugged me with the modpack release. If certain items become unique again, they should probably have thier stats beefed up to coincide with thier uniqueness. By the way, thanks for the quick response, very much appreciated as is all your hard work matey!

Well, I downloaded it, I get a CRC error in one of the files though....one of the Black Pearl graphics files I think, is this a known problem?

strange...what was the EXACT name of the black pearl? there are two versions of it.

The exact message is a popup window that says:

Any Ideas?

I installed the version 14 alpha patches and it appears the same file gets overlayed again with no CRC error, so hopefully it is a moot point hehe.......anyways on a seperate front.....I encountered something and would like to know if it is a bug or a design feature......I was leaving port...Oxbay or Redmond...can't remember and pirates were in the midst of a suicide attack against the fort...a few luggers and a fleut....now...the fleut struck her colors after being pasted......I waltz in and proceed to board and capture the surrendered ship when I did not even lob one cannonball at it...is this supposed to be this way? I am not complaining....but it seems really scavengeristic LMAO <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

i asked because there are two black pearl's: the original and the new one, which is a replica from that in the film, but not in use yet. the one you mentioned is the old one. i mainly asked because it might help the modders.

i'm not entirely sure if the ship is supposed to be able to be boarded by everyone, but what you did is commonly known as: 'seeing all the angles' <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Yeah it works now, I downloaded it this time from filepanet or shack or something with "file" infront of it instead of your site Pieter, but seeing as i was using IE... i can see how it got corrupted :p

Anywho... another question... I got "Horror of the Sea" label... and I cant get it off no matter what flag I raise, what marque i get, or no matter how much money i donate to the church (I have donated well over 2 million >.>)... and no matter how many enemy ships i sink or how many damsels in distresses I save... any suggestions? I ran out of food and no one will sell me some.. i scrapped some from a passing pirate ship... I had 2 manowars and 2 battleships full o men n guns... and now I am left with 3 hulls with no one to sail em and 76 men trying to run a manowar <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

That shouldn't really be possible. The ship should surrender to the enemy and not to you. But it could be that the code for that doesn't work 100% right. Please keep an eye open for when this occurs again.

Did you ever forget to pay back a loan? It seems that is a major cause of continuous reputation drops. Also: Pirates should still do business with you. And once you got your commerce skill up to 5 or higher, other towns' shipyards and stores should do business with you again as well, though it will cost you more money.

Never loaned or got a loan, I sacked two spanish towns (note: this didnt give me the label when I did it, i checked) and had about 5 million... I was in falaise de fleur doing the "locked chest" quest (where the two pirates who you cant kill steal it), was looking for the guy... and some guy ran at me and told me that he recognized me and then I killed about 30 french guards and a few civilians... one civilian started wackin on me, I killed him and it said "the merchantmen (or some other such) do not forgot" and a bunch of text flew in the xp/combot/event "window" in the top left hand corner and i couldnt read the rest of it. I then left the port, the fort fired on me... one volley from each of my ships had more than half the guns down (on swashbuckler too >.>) and before I intended it i had sacked falaise de fleur :p Thats when I noticed the change. I'll try n get my commerce up so I dont have to rely on instant boarding to win battles :p

On a side note, the pirates DO trade with me, but they dont like it... over a million bucks for a boat i sold them for 100k. I got to go, but so far the pirates trade with me and the taverns at all the towns have less than 5 men for me.

[/quote]

Will do, I will attempt to do this and recreate it each time I notice a pirate surrender to a fort or an enemy that is not me.

If you raise a pirate flag during a battle, you might be recognized as a pirate when walking around a town. When you killed the civilian, it seems to me like the civilian was actually a trader in disguise. The Merchant Guild is very unhappy when you kill traders, so you end up with a really bad relation and many people and ships trying to kill you.

There is always some amount of sailors to hire in the taverns. This amount is dependent on your reputatin though. When you hire the sailors, then wait a day, there should be some sailors again. But at a low reputation, this works really slow and you might take a month to get up to full crew again, while it takes you two or three days at a high reputation.

"you stand accused of attacking and looting falaise de fleur. what do you have to say about this?"

"it wasn't on purpose! they started it!" <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

you actually accidentally sacked a fort! i must say that's impressive.

streetfights can ideed sometimes go haywire. i once killed someone who attacked me, at the same moment that my officer tried to shoot him. my enemy dropped on the ground, the bullet wizzed over him, hitting someone else, causing him to attack me, and the rest of the town going after me as well! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> it was like tortuga! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> of course, the guards did absolutely nothing. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> they just sat back and enjoyed the mayhem.

i think that it takes about a hundred points to get back up to hero or neutral. i can take a very long time. rescue sailors floating above a shipwreck to slowly boost up your reputation. but look on the bright side: this is a forced oppurtunity to get the record of the longest time at sea without going into port! just moor at a pirate town once in a while to save and carry on! now you have such a crappy reputation, you might just as wll join the pirates if your notiority is high enough.

Why not?
If those ships are Pirates, then they are in combat state against "you", as well as the fort.

If they surrender, why not be able to board them?

This is why your reputation went to the bottom. Unfortunately, the guy who attacked you was a merchant, and the merchant's guild is powerful enough that if you happen to kill a merchant, even in self defense, your reputation goes to the worst possible and you get attacked by soldiers. The country where you killed the merchant is supposed to become hostile as well.

So in summation, we can say that WhiteWolf has verified that this part of code "is" working as intended. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

i've heard that you can kill a merchant when throwing a poisoned knife, because nobody knows who did it. if you do it right that is. the poison kills him, but the attack mode isn't triggered if nobody saw you throwing it.
