Its my first posting so hi everybody. I'm really looking forward to getting this game as Ive heard how highly rated it was but my question is, what was soo bad with it to warrant a such a huge mod?

well my friend, it's because the developers of most pirate games are always just trying to play to the biggest croud they can. Thus they make over simple nautical games with just a lot of swashbuckling and stuff ot play to the majority of the sheeple who would be interested in playing it.

if they made games to our standards, our being the guys who have a facination with this time period and want as emersive, realistic, historical and in-depth playing experience as we can possibly get, they'd isolate the majority of the idiots out there who simply want a game where they can sail around and blow stuff up.

an example, even with all our advanced technology, if ya look at the preview of hte east india company game they're making, you'll notice that they still haven't even gotten the blasted waves to look right, I've never seen an ocean with small tiny waves, but that's what people see in the movies so that's what ya get in games.

As a result, people who actually care about what a nautical game should have in it, created this mod, and as best as these people have been able to do, many without any formal training, try to make up for some of the things the game lacked for those of us who have a more serious interest in the time period.

(wonders when some company is going to FINALLY make a totally in depth pirate nautical game that meets his very high expectations)

lol I see, enough said. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

My guess is, never. Well spoken though.

Welcome aboard. Hope you enjoy you time here. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

it would be nice if one of those producers would end up here so he finally knows what the buyers actually want.

not unless one of them actually ends up here. we need to advertise this site, but that would cost money.

Does a game need to be bad to warrant a good mod? I know of a lot of good games that have been modded to be even better anyway. In the case of PotC: The original game wasn't bad per se, but it was finished in a hurry (due to Disney's interference) and therefore not quite as good as it could and perhaps should have been. However, with all the code files openly available for easy editing, it didn't take long for the modders to start tweaking the game. Eventually this became the huge mod we now all know as the Build mod. The size of the mod is only limited by the imagination, knowledge and spare time of the modders working on it. The size is not limited by the original quality of the game at all.

Okay so Ive now recieved this game and Im wondering. Do I play it through unmodded in case I miss anything or is it unplayable in it basic form?

well, i would say it's unplayable in COMPARISON to the modded version. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Personally, I would play through the oroginal game. Yes you can get through it, and its somewhat entertaining, but it also gets boring after doing the same thing over and over. I played through the original game before I knew about the build mods, and I made it through, but now that I use the builds, its GREATLY improves the gaming experience. Only after playing the original game, I think, can someone really comprehend all that has been done to both improve and add to the game with these mods.

My thoughts exactly. Try it unmodded first, just to be able to appreciate our modding work better. If you start straight with the mod, you can never appreciate what has been done to improve the game.

yes. and after a while you'll forget what the original game was like. it may seem strange, but it might be a good idea that when you play the mods, you should go back to the original game once in a while. it makes you appreciate it more.
